Organizational Setting and Reporting
The Knowledge Management Service provides strategy and tools to enable an effective knowledgemanagement environment in which United Nations personnel and their stakeholders capture, share and disseminate the substantive knowledge relevant to their expertise. The Sales/Marketing Intern reports to Information Systems Officer within the Social Collaboration and Networking Unit. The Department of Management/OICT/KMS internship is for two months with an opportunity for extension, pending on the needs of the Office. The internship is UNPAID and full-time. Interns work five days per week (35 hours) under the supervision of a staff member in the department or office to which they are assigned.
Responsibilities
Key responsibilities: The Intern will support the technical development and implementation of Unite Connections, as well as, community-building and user support. He/she will be responsible for supporting the design and implementation of enterprise knowledge management systems initiatives that may include document management, records management, digital assets management, document imaging and scanning, collaboration and Web Content management. Candidates must be familiar with cutting-edge technology and tools in order to carry out the responsibilities outlined above. Responsibilities will also include the following:
Experience with social networking and collaboration platforms.
Experience with service-oriented architecture and Web design and development tools and languages, e.g. J2EE, Spring, Struts, Hibernate, JDBC, XML, Web Services, SOAP, JSP, HTML, Javascript, Ajax, JUnit, CVS, Subversion, MQ, JMS, .NET.
Relational database experience (e.g. SQL, Oracle 8i/9i/10g/11g, Postgres, DB2). Strong background working in distributed Unix or Linux environments.
Experience designing N-tiered applications, with multi-tier architecture and production Internet architectures.
Contribute to end-user and GUI development of websites, portals and web-based applications.
Support the Information Systems Officer to ensure applications meet the communication, engagement, and adoption goals of the Social Collaboration and Networking Unit.

Education
Applicants must be enrolled in a degree programme in a graduate school (second university degree or higher); or if pursing their studies in countries where higher education is not divided into undergraduate and graduate stages; have completed at least four years of full-time studies at a university or equivalent institution towards the completion of a degree. Be computer literate in standard software applications; have demonstrated a keen interest in the work of the United Nations and have a personal commitment to the ideals of the Charter; and have the ability to interact with individuals of different cultural backgrounds and beliefs, which include willingness to try and understand and be tolerant of differing opinions and views.
Work Experience
Applicants are not required to have professional work experience for participation in the programme.
Languages
English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For this post fluency in oral and written English is required. Knowledge of another official UN language is desirable.
