Job Description
ICANN has an exciting new opportunity for an exceptional and highly skilled communicator to establish and lead ICANN's internal communications function.

RESPONSIBILITIES
Establish the function
  • Work with VP, Global Communications to establish the vision for ICANN's internal communications, taking account of the significant work already done through the Organizational Effectiveness Initiative and by individual staff members.
  • Develop the strategy and establish the internal communications function, based on best practices within the communications profession.
  • Develop appropriate mechanisms to facilitate cross-functional and cross-level communications.
  • Identify obstacles to effective internal communications in our structure and work practices, and develop plans to address them.
  • Develop a way to bring our staff fully into the process and engage them in a change for the better.
Advice and training
  • Serve as a professional resource for ICANN's staff on improving communication within the organization.
  • Work with the communications team to increase their understanding of internal communications and leadership's role in it.
  • Provide staff training in internal communications skills.
  • Help staff to write clearly and concisely.
  • Provide strategic and timely confidential advice to the Vice President, and through him to the CEO and executive team.
Coordination
  • Serve as the central coordination point for issues that affect the staff's ability to communicate effectively.
  • Work closely with the Human Resources team.
Other duties as assigned by the Vice President.

Required Skills
  • Demonstrated communications and human relations skills, with excellent analytical ability and strong understanding of organizational behavior.
  • Excellent judgment, discernment and trustworthiness; strategic thinker, politically aware.
  • High degree of diplomacy, tact, discretion and commitment to integrity.
  • Demonstrated ability to multi-task, and to establish and follow through on priorities.
  • Excellent oral, written and interpersonal communication skills.
  • Strong familiarity with online communications tools that can contribute to effective internal communications.
  • Fluent English required; at least one additional language at business competency level is strongly desired.
  • Ability to quickly learn the ICANN environment and its current issues.
  • Able to cope with continuous change and pressure in a dynamic and fast changing environment.
EDUCATION
  • Undergraduate degree required; post-graduate degree in communications or a related field is highly desirable.
Required Experience
The Manager of Internal Communications will be a good listener, with an ability to engage people, to draw them out, and to tell ICANN's story internally just as the rest of the Communications Department tells it externally.
EXPERIENCE
  • Minimum of five years of experience in leading internal communications in a complex international organization, ideally in a non-profit or multistakeholder environment. Experience in establishing an internal communications function, especially in a period of organizational transition, would be a distinct advantage.
  • Minimum of seven years of experience in professional communications.
  • International background and multilingual ability strongly preferred.
  • Background in Internet policy would be ideal; familiarity with ICANN is desirable but not required.
