Job Summary:
The International Food Policy Research Institute (IFPRI) seeks a Graphic Designer for the Publications Unit in the Communications and Knowledge Management Division. This is a one-year, fixed-term, exempt, renewable appointment.
The successful candidate will design a wide range of print and digital materials, including publications (books, briefs, magazines, reports, brochures, flyers, and e-publications), displays (banners, signs, and slideshows), branding, packaging, multimedia materials, infographics, and design elements for web pages. This position is based at IFPRI headquarters in Washington, DC. and may include minimal travel.
Essential Duties:
• Create designs and layouts for a wide range of materials (see above) based on standard layout principles and aesthetic design concepts, using Adobe Create Suite software on PC platform, as well as some Microsoft Office products.
• Develop graphics; vector illustrations; branding; statistical charts, graphs, and infographics; artwork; and design-related elements for print and web.
• Lay out a range of publications in Adobe InDesign, using existing templates or developing templates appropriate to the project.
• Confer with internal and external project leaders, authors, and IFPRI staff to conceptualize, brainstorm, and create designs that are well suited to individual project needs and various audiences (including policymakers, researchers, donors, NGOs, organizations in developing countries, and the general public).
• Route proofs for review, input nontext changes, ensure accuracy of all design elements, and prepare final output for print and web.
• Engage in a streamlined workflow and work efficiently to meet deadlines.
• Contribute to the way IFPRI is represented to its audiences by adhering to existing IFPRI branding guidelines.
• Act as a liaison/project manager with vendors, contractors, and freelancers, as needed.
• Other duties as assigned.
Required Qualifications:
• Bachelor's degree in graphic design or related field
• 3 – 5 years of experience as a designer comfortable with PC platform and Adobe design software, as well as a working knowledge of Microsoft Word templates, PowerPoint, and Excel
• Ability to create original vector illustrations using Adobe Illustrator
• Exceptional organizational skills—ability to multitask, work independently, be resourceful, and follow through to closure under tight deadlines in a fast-paced environment
• Demonstrated ability to understand target audiences and relationships to brand concepts
• Strong interpersonal and communications (oral/written) skills and ability to work on a team in a multicultural environment where English is not always the first language
• Knowledge of or experience working on international development issues, especially in areas related to IFPRI's mandate
Preferred Qualifications:
• Adobe Creative Suite 6 (Master Collection), experience with InDesign templates
• Working knowledge of HTML5, motion graphics a plus!
• Design/production experience in print publishing environments as well as experience with video and multimedia
