World Climate Research Programme (WCRP) Joint Planning Staff Research (RES) Department
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Under the supervision of the Director of the WCRP and subject to overall policy directives, the incumbent will carry out the following duties:
- Lead in planning, implementation, coordination, monitoring and evaluation of one or more of the WCRP projects and activities undertaken in close coordination with the International Project Offices (namely the Global Energy and Water Cycle Experiment (GEWEX); Stratospheric Processes and their Role in Climate (SPARC); the Climate Variability and Predictability Study (CLIVAR): the Climate and Cryosphere (CLIC) project), and/or WCRP sponsored scientific and technical working groups and panels;
- Oversee the organization of, and proactively participate in, sessions of international working groups, panels, committees, experts' meetings and scientific and technical symposia for WCRP, as appropriate; prepare, as necessary, working documents for these meetings and reports on their results to be issued as WCRP publications;
- Establish and maintain effective communication between climate working groups, panels, projects of WCRP and relevant national, regional and international research institutions, university groups, and WMO departments, as well as with observational and research activities related to the WCRP mission and objectives;
- Maintain current knowledge of progress in climate research including progress in in situ measurements and remote-sensing methods from space, climate modelling, and studies of climate processes focused on the atmosphere, ocean, land-surface and cryosphere;
- Prepare, as requested, scientific and technical statements, summaries and documents on aspects of climate research relevant to WCRP;
- Assist in the preparation of WCRP contributions to sessions of the constituent bodies of the WCRP sponsoring agencies, as required;
- Contribute to the promotion of the WCRP capacity development, communication and outreach activities;
- Carry out other relevant duties as required.
Education
Masters degree or equivalent from a recognized university and/or technical institute in atmospheric sciences, physics, geophysics, oceanography, applied mathematics, Earth system science, or a closely related discipline. Ph.D. or equivalent post-graduate training in a mathematical/physical discipline would be an advantage.
Experience
- At least 10 years of combined national and international progressively responsible experience in relevant climate studies and global change research.
- Extensive experience in writing reports, proposals, documents and correspondence in English.
- First-hand acquaintance or previous involvement with WCRP climate research activities would be an advantage.
- Familiarity with the procedures of international organizations and/or coordination of international scientific/technical projects. Other requirements
- Ability to establish and maintain professional contacts within the three WCRP sponsoring agencies (WMO, ICSU, IOC) and with other organizations involved in climate research.
- Demonstrated ability to write proposals and secure funding for scientific and technical, and educational meetings and conferences. Excellent knowledge of Microsoft Office applications.
- Sense of responsibility, maturity of judgement, initiative, originality of ideas, ability to plan, organize and implement international programme components and projects.
- Ability to foster team spirit and to work in a multicultural environment.
- Excellent knowledge of English or French and a good working knowledge of the other language.
- Knowledge of other official languages of the Organization would be an advantage.

Fixed-term of two years** 1 May 2014 or as soon as possible thereafter Applications from suitably qualified female and male candidates are equally welcome. The statutory retirement age after 1 January 2014 is 65. For external applicants, only those who are expected to complete the term of appointment will normally be considered.
The Secretary-General may appoint a candidate at a grade below the advertised grade of the post, with the possibility of promotion to that grade within three years of appointment, subject to satisfactory appraisal of performance. ** Possibility of renewal pending satisfactory performance after an initial probationary period of one year, which can be extended up to a maximum of two years.
SALARY, ALLOWANCES AND OTHER BENEFITS
Annual net base salary on initial appointment is US$ 87,069 for staff members with dependants US$ 80,887 for staff members without dependants
Annual post adjustment on initial salary is US$ 91,161 for staff members with dependants US$ 84,689 for staff members without dependants
This post adjustment, which is subject to change without notice, is paid in addition to the net basic salary.
