Assignment:
Under the supervision of the Acoustic Officer, Scientific Methods (SM) Unit, Software Application (SA) Section, International Data Centre Division (IDC), to: Update the Infrasound Reference Event Database (IRED):
- The Consultant primary task will be to build and re-analyze the Late Event Bulletin (LEB) containing infrasound arrivals for the period 2010 - 2011 with the infrasound analysis toolkit (Geotool, Geotool-PMCC and InfraNet webpage);
- The events should be incorporated in the IRED with the support of Perl and SQL scripts (made available by IDC/SA/SM), based on current documentation and IDC/SA guidance;
- The emphasis will be on the validation of events with external sources as often as possible in order to improve the quality of the database. Non-validated LEB with infrasound arrivals should be saved in a new category of the IRED (subset named: LEB);
- When deemed necessary, the consultant will input corrections in the IRED as indicated by IDC/SA;
Infrasound campaigns analysis:
- Process the available data from the Provisional Technical Secretariat (PTS) infrasound portable array campaigns in Finland, Japan, Chile and the Mediterranean region using the IDC infrasound processing software;
- Analyze results and merge with primary task, where possible;
- Provide recommendations to IDC/SA on the IDC infrasound processing algorithm and infrasound analysis toolkit;
Other infrasound tasks:
- Perform other infrasound tasks as required by IDC/SA during the course of the consultancy;
Documentation and reporting:
- The IRED documentation provided to IRED users should be updated according to the modifications and updates obtained from primary task;
- Summarize the content of the IRED, extract its main features and assess. Summarize each subset categories and their results in the same manner;
- The Consultant should also work on identifying potential areas for improvement of the IRED and its overall quality. The improvement should be summarized in a document and submitted to IDC/SA staff, prior to their possible implementation in the IRED;
- Prepare monthly reports for each task;
Perform other, related operational duties as necessary.
Qualifications:
- Advanced university degree in Geophysics or related field;
- At least 5 years of relevant experience in infrasound processes and technology;
- Knowledge of seismo-acoustic signals and infragenic sources. Basic notions about infrasound wave propagation in the atmosphere that affects the detected signals at IMS stations is desired;
- Knowledge of IDC software for interactively reviewing seismo-acoustic data from the International Monitoring System (IMS) network, especially the Analyst Review Station (ARS) and Geotool-PMCC software;
- Experience in the fusion of multiple waveform technologies, particularly using infrasound data in combination with seismic and hydroacoustic results;
- Experience working with Oracle database. Experience with SQL and Perl. Knowledge of the IDC database structure is desired;
- Knowledge of the structure and physics of the atmosphere is desired;
- Excellent written and oral communication skills in English essential. Working knowledge on one of the other official languages of the CTBTO Preparatory Commission an asset.
