Background
UNDP is the UN's global development network, an organization advocating for change and connecting countries to knowledge, experience and resources to help people build a better life. UNDP is on the ground in 166 countries, working with them on their own solutions to global and national development challenges. As they develop local capacity, they draw on the people of UNDP and its wide range of partners. UNDP's global focus is helping countries build and share solutions to the challenges of: (a) Democratic Governance; (b) Poverty Reduction; (c) Crisis Prevention and Recovery; (d) Environment and Energy and (e) HIV/AIDS.
UNDP helps developing countries attract and use aid effectively. In all its activities, UNDP encourages the protection of human rights and the empowerment of women.
Within the aforementioned global context, UNDP Turkey works for Democratic Governance and Growth without Poverty. For more than 50 years the UNDP has worked in close partnership with the Turkish Government and numerous national and international institutions, including NGOs, academics and the business community.
UNDP Turkey aims to find practical solutions to Turkey's development challenges and manages projects together with the Turkish Government and other partners to address them. Since 1986 it has implemented over 80 programs across the country. In addition, the UNDP has played a major role in response to crises and disasters in Turkey and the surrounding region.
UNDP's strategy for 2006-2010, formulated with and agreed by the Turkish Government, highlights three core areas, through which UNDP will support the implementation of Turkey's development agenda through project implementation and policy advice. These are: 1) capacity building for democratic governance; 2) action and advocacy for poverty reduction; and 3) environment and sustainable development. In addition to these core areas, UNDP Turkey is emphasizing the role of women, private sector, capacity development and information and communication technology in its policies and programmes.
Cooperation between UNDP and GAP RDA traces back to mid-90s, and is rooted in the umbrella programme on sustainable human development in the Southeast Anatolia Region. In 2008, with the financial support of SIDA, GAP RDA and UNDP started the 1st Phase of Innovations for Women's Empowerment in Southeast Anatolia with a view to strengthen the capacities at the local level to plan and implement initiatives that empower women in economic and social life. The Project achieved an important set of results which set the basis for implementation of a new phase.
The new phase of the project has two main objectives:
1) Increasing women's individual productive and social capacities and enterprise level management skills to empower women within their communities
2) Increasing women's income through entrepreneurship and increased employment opportunities
As an important component of the Project, a regional textile brand; 'Argande' has been developed during Phase I. Under this component, Turkey's most recognized fashion designers have worked in close cooperation with women in the region and prepared women's wear collections to be sold in big stores.
By making the cultural heritage visible, Argande component has been supporting the perception of the region to grow in a more positive way based on local cultural treasures, diversity and women's productivity. The brand also has a strong emphasis on regional features such as the regional people and human diversity and the efforts of women to integrate their cultural and moral values into global knowledge and commercial markets.
