Organizational Setting and Reporting
This position is located within the Office of Information and Communications Technology of the Department of Management. The incumbent reports to the Chief of the Security and Architecture Unit, Strategic Management Services.
Responsibilities
- Within delegated authority, the Information Technology Assistant will be responsible for the following duties:
- Occasionally supervises a team of staff for specific projects.
- Conducts vulnerability management surveys and malware related incident response support.
- Assists with system, web, and application penetration tests.
- Monitors various security related logs for indications of un-intended activity.
- Performs administration, operation, technical support, and monitoring of server systems
- Liaises with other groups of ITSD and the user Departments for maintaining the efficient and reliable operations of server systems.
- Assists in identifying the need for new systems or re-engineering of the existing systems.
- Collects various statistics on the performance and reliability of server systems, and produces pertinent reports.
- Drafts documentation and reports.
- Drafts end-user and/or technical documentation.
- Detects problem patterns and recommends solutions.
- Performs other related duties as required.

Education
- High school diploma or equivalent. Additional education or training in computer science, engineering or a related discipline is desirable. GIAC, CISSP or other certification is an advantage.
Work Experience
- A minimum of seven years of experience in information technology or related area is required.
- Experience with one or several programming languages, with a preference for languages used in web applications (.NET, ASP, Java, php); experience with Linux/Unix OS operation; in IT security / penetration testing;
- in incident management and monitoring or related areas and in computer forensics is desirable.
Languages
- English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat.
- For the post advertised, fluency in oral and written English is required.
- Knowledge of another official United Nations language is an advantage.
Assessment Method
- Evaluation of qualified applicants may include an assessment exercise which may be followed by a competency-based interview.

Passing the Administrative Assessment Support Test (ASAT) at Headquarters or an equivalent recognised locally-administered test at a United Nations Office is a prerequisite for recruitment consideration in the General Service category in the United Nations.
