Senior Research Officer with Research Group of Diarrhoeal Diseases and Epidemiology under the Centre for Food and Waterborne Diseases (Internal Advertisement #385/13)
icddr,b invites applications from suitable candidates(Staff members & CSA holders) for the position ofSenior Research Officer with Research Group of Diarrhoeal Diseases and Epidemiology under the Centre for Food and Waterborne Diseases. The appointment will be made on a fixed-term basis for 1 year, which is renewable depending on performance and availability of funds.
Duty station – Dhaka
Salary – Annual Tk. 506,840/- inclusive of house rent and conveyance allowances with other admissible benefits.
Benefits/facilities – 14.8% retirement fund contribution by icddr,b, children allowance @Tk.1,420/- per child per month, medical facilities for dependent spouse and children, group life insurance. Subsidized canteen, transport and daycare facilities subject to availability.
Job Profile
- Laboratory Diagnostics: Perform Microbiological and molecular methods for isolation and detection of different enteric pathogens specially Vibrio cholerae and V. parahaemolyticus; Extraction of bacterial DNA, Dipstick test, DFA, Colony blot hybridization, DNA sequencing etc. Knowledge of bacterial typing using different DNA finger printing tools eg: PFGE, MLVA, and RAPD. Storing samples; Update database; Data analysis for communication/publication and to generate new research ideas; Train junior staffs and students in order to perform laboratory test effectively.
- Project Implementation: Prepare weekly work plan for the laboratory works of the project; collect, process, and store biological specimens from enrolled patients and healthy subjects as described in the study protocol; Monitor storage temperature when kept in -20 degree or ultralow freezers, keep log of temperature and other relevant records; Check sample storage system periodically and update record of using stored samples; follow up to ensure adequate logistics supply for lab and field staff; raise requisitions for the procurement of kits, reagents, stationeries through proper channel; Perform data entry and report writing; Follow up and report to lab supervisor regarding day to day work in order to effective project/research implementation and ensuring high quality research.
- Proposal and Protocol Development: Provide input to principal investigator on proposals and protocols development; read published journals, analyze existing data, and generate new ideas for possible projects; develop concept notes in collaboration with colleagues and PIs; prepare proposals with direction from PIs; support PIs in presentation of progress reports to donors (e.g. by creating supporting materials for distribution to donors) to be able to write meaningful proposals for funding.
- Mentoring and Training: Guide team members on completion of tasks, activities, reports and documents (e.g. qualitative research methods, PMDS formalities); mentor and train staff on-the-job in the field; provide feedback to supervisor on team members' performance in order to spread knowledge and develop team members.
Requirements:
Education and Relevant Experience :
- Masters in Microbiology from a reputed university;
- 4 years of practical research experience in a reputed microbiological laboratory.
Functional Competencies:
Knowledge of
- Microbiological and molecular methods for isolation and detection of different enteric pathogens specially Vibrio cholerae and V. parahaemolyticus;
- Supervising junior staffs and students;
- Data analysis, data presentation, and manuscript writing;
- Bacterial DNA extraction, rapid detection of cholera bacteria by dipstick, DFA, PCR, colony blot hybridization, and DNA sequencing etc;
- Molecular characterizations of different enteric pathogens using Simplex, Multiplex, and Real Time PCR;
- Bacterial typing using different finger printing techniques such as MLEE, PFGE, RAPD, MLVA etc.;
