Organizational Setting and Reporting
This position is located within the United Nations Assistance Mission for Iraq (UNAMI). The Information Analyst (Deputy Chief, JAPU) will report to the Senior Information Analyst (Chief JAPU), Baghdad.
Responsibilities
Under the supervision of the Chief of the Joint Analysis and Policy Unit (JAPU), the incumbent will act as Deputy and will be responsible for the following duties:
- Support the ongoing recruitment for JAPU and consolidate the set up of the Unit;
- Manage a team of junior international and national analysts;
- Review and monitor activities in the country or region assigned;
- Stay abreast of developments and assess trends which might affect the situation and the impact of intra-regional issues;
- Recommend solutions/possible action by UNAMI;
- Identify gaps and priorities for analysis;
- Task and analyze political, security, socio-economic and humanitarian related events within assigned area with a view to provide early warning advise Mission leadership; Identify analytical reports and papers on sensitive and high profile matters of concern to UNAMI;
- Coordinate thematic task forces;
- Draft notes, background papers, talking points, speeches and other correspondence for senior UN officials;
- Act as focal point for collection and analyses of information on thematic issues of assignment;
- Arrange and participate in negotiations, field visits and fact-finding missions;
- Meet and coordinate regularly with operational teams including UN Mission and UNCT staff, national officials as well as Military and Civilian Police officers to plan and review activities;
- Provide up-to-date information to senior officials regarding JAPU substantive and thematic matters and country or regional issues and make recommendations on actions to take;
- Maintain contacts with other sectors of the UN, UN Agencies, government counterparts, international governmental and non-governmental organizations and local civil society organizations to broaden JAPU's information base;
- Coordinate with UN entities on policy matters;
- Brief representatives and provide, as appropriate, suggestions and recommendations;
- Participate in conferences, seminars and academic for a related to assigned area of expertise;
- Participate in selection process of staff assignments;
- Carry out, in consultation with the Chief of the JAPU, administrative functions relating to staff management, planning and budget; Draft JAPU work-plans and support its implementation;
- Perform other related duties as required.

Education
- Advanced university Degree (Masters Degree or equivalent) in Political Science, International Relations, Administration, Management, Development, Law, or related field.
- A first level university degree with a relevant combination academic qualifications and two additional years of experience may be taken into consideration in lieu of the advanced degree.
Work Experience
- At least 7 years of progressively responsible experience in peacekeeping operations, conflict resolution, international relations, development, experience in information related field.
- A clear understanding of the region and the culture and previous experience in the Middle East would be highly desirable.
Languages
- English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat.
- For the position advertised, fluency in oral and written English is required.
- Knowledge of Arabic is desirable.
Assessment Method
- Evaluation of qualified candidates may include an assessment exercise which may be followed by competency-based interview.
