Applications from suitably qualified female and male candidates are equally welcome. The statutory retirement age after 1 January 2014 is 65. For external applicants, only those who are expected to complete the term of appointment will normally be considered. QUALIFICATIONS Education Ph.D. or equivalent in Atmospheric Sciences or a closely related field. Experience At least 10 years of national and international progressively responsible experience in atmospheric sciences and in particular weather-related research. Leadership and management indicative of progressive responsibility in the development and execution of national and international weather research programmes and projects as demonstrated by technical and scientific publications, management responsibility and/or technical leadership. Extensive experience is required in writing technical reports, documents, and scientific publications in English, in organizing scientific meetings, in overseeing budgets and in managing staff. Experience in fostering transdiciplinary research would be an added advantage. Knowledge and ability to present concepts and issues associated with the broad range of research, operational and societal issues associated with advancing weather prediction and the utilization of weather products. Understanding of the value chain from research to operations to products and services. Other requirements Excellent oral and written communication skills. Excellent connections with the international weather research community. Maturity of judgement and demonstrated talent and ability for managing internal and external cooperation and complex projects. Evidence of teamwork and ability to work in a multicultural environment. Advanced skills in the use of computers in the office environment are essential. Languages Excellent knowledge of English or French and a good working knowledge of the other language. Knowledge of other official languages of the Organization would be an advantage.

- The Secretary-General may appoint a candidate at a grade below the advertised grade of the post, with the possibility of promotion to that grade within three years of appointment, subject to satisfactory appraisal of performance. SALARY, ALLOWANCES AND OTHER BENEFITS Annual net base salary on initial appointment is US$ 86,904 for staff members with dependants US$ 80,734 for staff members without dependants Annual post adjustment on initial salary is US$ 91,162 for staff members with dependants US$ 84,690 for staff members without dependants This post adjustment, which is subject to change without notice, is paid in addition to the net basic salary. CHIEF, WORLD WEATHER RESEARCH DIVISION DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES Under the supervision of the Director of the Atmospheric Research and Environment Branch, the incumbent will be responsible for managing the World Weather Research (WWR) Division in support of the World Weather Research Programme (WWRP). The incumbent will perform the following duties: (a) Manage support of the Scientific Steering Committee (SSC) for the WWRP and its expert groups established by the WMO Commission for Atmospheric Sciences (CAS) including overseeing the organization and implementation of relevant meetings, workshops, conferences and symposia; Develop and update a long-term Implementation and Science Plan on the WWRP, in cooperation with the SSC - WWRP and its expert groups, that includes a balance between user needs and opportunities provided by science and technology developments of relevance to WWRP; Work to ensure that the research projects (e.g., field campaigns, modelling and data impact studies, focused research collaborations) that are initiated, endorsed, and/or guided by the WWRP are implemented; Promote the use of numerical models of the earth system to enhance seamless weather forecasts in support of safety of life and property, and socio-economic applications; Maintain and foster the development of activities at the interface between WWRP and other programmes or activities, including the Scientific Steering Committee for Environmental Pollution and Atmospheric Chemistry, the Working Group on Numerical Experimentation, the co-sponsored World Climate Research Programme, and other WMO Programmes that address the needs of Members in operational prediction, training, and service delivery; Lead, within the Research Department, WWRP-related contributions to sessional and inter-sessional work of CAS as well as to other WMO constituent bodies; Plan and organize technical conferences, symposia, workshops and working group meetings of the WWRP, including training activities and the resulting reports and publications; Organize and participate in the publication of technical reports, popular science brochures, data reports, newsletters, bulletins and other services or products of the WWRP; Manage the WWR Division staff to ensure fair, effective and efficient roles and responsibilities, promote good communication, team effort and proactive planning and work scheduling; Manage and monitor the optimal use of the budget for the WWR Division and related trust funds and legal agreements in support of relevant activities; Manage international coordination offices/ project offices related to the activities of WWRP; Manage the relationship between WWRP and WCRP in the interest of common endeavours at the weather-climate interface; Carry out other relevant duties as required. ________________
