Organizational Setting and Reporting
Under the overall guidance and supervision of the Chief of Staff (CoS), the Special Assistant will be responsible for, but not limited to, performing the following duties:
Responsibilities
Support the Chief of Staff in the management of the Mission by: Ensuring the CoS is aware of relevant political and operational developments in the country; Bringing issues in need of resolution to the CoS' attention, formulating options for solving problems and ensuring follow-up; Supporting the CoS in the alignment of strategic and operational plans in conjunction with the substantive components of the Mission; Drafting correspondence, reports, talking points and compiling relevant information and reference data; Reviewing documents and correspondence, and ensuring accuracy of information and appropriate formatting while maintaining confidentiality; Coordinating support for the Mission's field presences, including chairing relevant working groups with participants from the various sections of the Mission (security, substantive sections, mission support); Accompanying the CoS to meetings and handling note taking and follow-up; Organizing meetings, seminars and workshops; Serving as the Best Practices focal point for the Mission, focusing on knowledge management in close collaboration with DPA/HQ; Maintaining clear communication and coordination with the Special Assistants in the Front Offices of the SRSG and DSRSG/RC/HC; Contributing to the overall team spirit and capacity building of the OCoS personnel; Supervising staff if requested and supporting the management of the wider OCoS team. Undertake any other specific assignments as requested by the CoS.

Client Orientation: Considers all those to whom services are provided to be "clients" and seeks to see things from clients' point of view; Establishes and maintains productive partnerships with clients by gaining their trust and respect; Identifies clients' needs and matches them to appropriate solutions; Monitors ongoing developments inside and outside the clients' environment to keep informed and anticipate problems; Keeps clients informed of progress or setbacks in projects; Meets timeline for delivery of products or services to client.
Education
Advanced university degree (Master's degree or equivalent) in Political Science, Political Economy, International Relations, International Law, Public Administration, or related fields. A first level university degree with a relevant combination of academic qualifications and experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced university degree.
Work Experience
At least 5 years of progressively responsible experience in political affairs, diplomacy, conflict resolution, or related field. A minimum of one year's experience in a United Nations special political mission or peacekeeping operation is required. Experience at UN Secretariat headquarters is desirable.
Languages
Fluency in spoken and written English is required; Fluency in Arabic is desirable.
Assessment Method
Evaluation of qualified candidates may include an assessment exercise which may be followed by competency-based interview.
