Organizational Setting and Reporting
The internship is located in the Human Trafficking and Migrant Smuggling Section (HTMSS), Organized Crime and Illicit Trafficking Branch (OCB), Division for Treaty Affairs (DTA), United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC), Vienna (Austria).
The intern will work under the direct supervision of Professional staff of the Branch.

Responsibilities
The intern will provide substantive, organizational and logistic support to the daily work of the Global Programmes Against Trafficking in Human Beings and Smuggling of Migrants. Moreover the intern will assist in backstopping the work being carried out by field offices, especially those in South Asia and the Pacific. More particularly the intern will
  • Carry out research on the topic of cooperation between law enforcement and civil society in addressing trafficking in persons
  • Assist in work related to the issuance of the Pacific Bulletin
  • Assist in research on key concepts related to trafficking in persons and posing implementation challenges
  • Provide updates to the team about relevant UNODC publications (in the form of summaries, presentations, etc.)
  • Assist in technical support to the planning, implementation and monitoring of regional and national technical assistance projects in South Asia and the Pacific
  • Assist in preparing briefing notes, presentations and communications
  • Assist in liaising with offices within the United Nations and other external organizations
  • Carry out other tasks related to the implementation of the Global Programmes, as requested.

Education
Applicants for an internship must be enrolled in a full-time university degree programme (Master's or equivalent) in a graduate school (second university degree or higher), or, if applicants are pursuing their studies in countries where higher education is not divided into undergraduate and graduate stages, they must have completed at least four years of full-time studies at a university or equivalent institution towards the completion of a degree. Degree in the field of law is required.
Work Experience
Applicants are not required to have professional work experience for participation in the programme, but are encouraged to list all relevant work experience in their application.
Applicants must have a keen demonstrated interest in the work of the United Nations and have a personal commitment to the ideals of the Charter.
Languages
Fluency in English (both oral and written) is required. Knowledge of another UN official language is an advantage.
Assessment Method
Evaluation of qualified candidates may include an assessment exercise which may be followed by competency-based interview.
Special Notice
Duration: This internship position is for an initial period of three months, starting on 8 January 2014, with the option to extend to a total period of six months, based on the needs of the office and the availability of the intern.
