About the Organization At Thabyay Education Foundation (TEF), we believe that quality 'education for all' is the fulcrum for the development of peaceful, socially just, democratic and prosperous societies. Since we were founded in 1996, we have worked to support people from Myanmar as a "citizen organization", and later from Thailand and Cambodia and Laos, to access the education and professional development they need to help their societies achieve these goals. Our Mission is to educate, develop, inspire, connect, and empower individuals and organizations that are change-makers in South-East Asia, with a primary focus on Myanmar. We seek to achieve this through knowledge creation, innovative instruction, guided skills expansion, and by forging connections to networks, information and opportunities. We are inspired to create far-reaching transformations for and with the people of Myanmar. TEF has a staff of approximately 50 dedicated professionals who work out of 5 offices in 3 countries delivering 10 programs supported by 22 donors. Annual turnover is that of a middle sized NGO. These programs are centred around post high school international university preparation, post high school community development academies in conflict zones, curriculum development and teacher training support in refugee camps and in non-state schools in Myanmar, mobilizing Myanmar civil society organizations especially those engaged in peace & rights development, supported scholarships to international regional Universities, and rolling out an innovative elearning platform in-tandem with the increasing access to the internet within Myanmar, delivering human rights education in Burmese to local communities in rural areas and access to English language education to increase their access to livelihoods in the developing international and tourism sectors. The Role of the Executive Director The Executive Director will be expected to be able to achieve the following:
- Provide visionary leadership: Able to create and communicate a clear and compelling view for the future of education in both formal and informal sectors within Myanmar and TEF. Engage in strategic positioning: Understands the opportunities emerging in Myanmar and strategically positions TEF as a leader in education and professional development.

Attract commitment and support: Effectively builds commitment and wins support and resources for TEF's initiatives at multiple levels, both internally with staff and externally with donors. Ensure sound fiscal management: Builds stability and strength within the organization by responsibly managing and forecasting financial commitments. Drive results: Defines ambitious goals and establishes priorities with clear responsibilities to ensure results; manages projects, activities, resources effectively; maintaining focus on a critical path that will enable TEF to deliver its mission effectively.
Key Responsibilities Reporting to the Board of Directors, the Executive Director is responsible for driving the success of the TEF mission. S/he will bring vision and strategic leadership ability and will enable TEF to run innovative and effective programs which are well-known and respected. . The ED will have primary responsibility for the leadership, fiscal and operational management, fundraising and growth of TEF. Specific responsibilities include the following:
- Provide sound leadership within the organization and particularly, in developing the strategy of the organization based on TEF's mission. Effectively communicate TEF's, values, vision and strategic direction to internal and external constituencies. Maintain a healthy, effective and stable organization, and facilitate an environment in which staff work together as a team, with the facilitation of a strong and accountable leadership team Oversee the fiscal and operational management of TEF. This includes the planning and management of programs, budgets, and financial reporting. Play a key role in raising the public and private financial resources required to achieve strategic objectives. Personally solicit foundations, bilateral and multilateral donor agencies, corporations and high-wealth individuals. Work closely with the Board of Directors.
Experience, qualifications and attributes Qualifications and experience
- Five years of senior leadership experience at a similar sized non-profit or for profit organization, preferably one with an education and development focus. A record of success in achieving organizational results which are relevant to TEF, ideally in the education or development sector. Proven experience in building and leading teams of motivated and professional staff and inspiring them to adopt and achieve ambitious objectives. Strong fundraising competencies, including the passion, intellect, subject matter knowledge, and ambassadorial skills to engage major donors.

Personal Characteristics:
- Passion and enthusiasm for TEF's mission and for Myanmar. A positive change agent, who is able to invigorate TEF's growth to take advantage of the expanding opportunities in Myanmar, taking TEF to the next level. A clear communicator who will motivate and inspire internally and externally, with strong presentation and ambassadorial skills. A self-aware leader, who listens well to staff and stakeholders, and is able to fully leverage organizational talent through personnel development, mentoring and delegation. Personal and professional integrity. Ability to handle challenges with composure and self-assurance.
Education: Master's Degree in Education highly preferred. Candidates with a master's degree in International Development, Public Administration, or another relevant field will be considered.
Salary and benefits
- Salary will be commensurate with experience and qualification (Note: Local Salary) 20 days vacation, 20 days sick leave and public holidays designated by TEF. Limited health coverage Visa support and costs for TEF business-trips
