OBJECTIVES OF THE PROGRAMME :

The goals of PRI Group are to evaluate new preventive strategies, with particular emphasis on the use of new technologies, including molecular markers, to engage in research on methods to implement existing strategies taking into account the social, economic and cultural differences, to collaborate with decision makers to implement already available preventive interventions against cancer, particularly in developing countries where the need is highest and to foster technology transfer and generate educational processes for clinicians, public health decision makers and the public, to make sure the available technology is put in place where it is mostly needed.

Description of duties:

As a member of the team, and under the supervision of the Head of the PRI Group, the incumbent is expected to promote international research in the field of cervical cancer prevention and implementation. Responsibilities include development of research protocols, identification and evaluation of potential collaborators, supervision and training in field activities and data analysis at IARC, coordination of laboratory scientists, publication of results and attracting research funding from competitive sources.

The incumbent's assigned duties will be as follows:

• In the context of planned studies of cervical cancer screening in Tanzania in collaboration with WHO/RHR, to contribute to the development and implementation of protocol, including the design of questionnaires, collection of biological samples, monitoring activities, and statistical analyses.
• To develop in collaboration with PRI scientists the protocol of a randomised cluster trial to evaluate the effectiveness of different algorithms for cervical cancer screening in low resource settings with emphasis on Africa.
• To support the coordination and implementation of the ESTAMPA project in Latin America.
• To participate in other activities related to cervical cancer, including the introduction of new WHO/RHR recommendations and support for AFRO in the establishment and implementation of cervical cancer control programs.
• To perform other related duties as may be assigned by the Supervisor.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

Education:

Essential:

• Advanced university degree in medicine or biology. MD degree would be an important asset.

Desirable:

• Masters or higher University Degree (PhD) in epidemiology, public health or biostatistics.

Skills:

Functional Skills and Knowledge:

• Good knowledge of epidemiological methods, public health and clinical concepts in planning, conducting and evaluation of cancer screening and vaccination trials.
• Good field-work skills in managing epidemiological and above-mentioned studies in developing countries, particularly in Africa.

Ability to:

• Behave consistently in accordance with clear personal ethics and values.
• Discuss, understand and interpret relevant public health, epidemiological, and clinical issues in the context of HPV-related cancers.
• Proactively engage and take initiatives in the conduct and evaluation of the studies.
• Proven ability to write grant applications.
• Good oral and written communication skills.
• Good publication record in international journals.
• Knowledge of computing and the use of commonly used basic statistical software.

Experience:

Essential:

• At least five years of experience of which at least three years at the international level in positions related to the area of cancer epidemiology.

Desirable:

• Experience of work in developing countries, particularly in the African continent.

Languages:

• Excellent knowledge of English and good knowledge of French.

The mentioned annual salary rates can be subject to slight variations as they include components (post adjustment exchange rate) that are reviewed on a monthly basis.
