Organizational Setting and Reporting
The Offices of Human Resources Management/Outreach Internship seeks a statistician or data analyst to analyze data to improve gender balance in the United Nations and to support the Outreach Unit in developing more effective methods to attract and retain qualified women at all levels. The period of the internship is for two months with an opportunity for extension, pending the needs of the department.
The internship is UNPAID and full-time.
Interns work five days per week (35 hours) under the supervision of a staff member in the department or office to which they are assigned.
Responsibilities
Under the guidance of a supervisor, the intern would conduct research on factors that a) attract women to work for the United Nations, b) retain them in the UN, and c) contribute to career advancement in the UN, as well as to identify sources of suitable women candidates. Duties may include, but are not limited to:
designing surveys, conducting hypothesis testing, and identifying trends, patterns and causal relationships in data sets, and preparing summary reports;
conducting analysis of data from various sources, mapping career-path events to their corresponding likelihoods;
supporting data-mining and analysis of gender indicators;
supporting research and quantitative analysis of indicators for the monitoring of gender balance;
assisting Outreach staff in visualizing and validating data through graphs and maps;
assisting in the drafting of materials based on quantitative research and analysis;
undertaking other tasks as requested.
The Outreach Unit strives to offer interns an opportunity to work independently with substantive issues while also assisting colleagues in the day-to-day operations of the office.

Education
To qualify for an internship with the United Nations New York Headquarters Internship Programme, the following conditions must be met:
Applicants must be enrolled a graduate school programme (second university degree or higher); or
If pursuing their studies in countries where higher education is not divided into undergraduate and graduate stages, have completed at least four years of full-time studies at a university or equivalent institution towards the completion of a degree.
Be computer literate in standard software applications;
Have a demonstrated keen interest in the work of the United Nations and have a personal commitment to the ideals of the Charter; and
Have a demonstrated ability to successfully interact with individuals of different cultural backgrounds and beliefs, which include willingness to try and understand and be tolerant of differing opinions and views.
Work Experience
Applicants are not required to have professional work experience for participation in the programme. Familiarity with a statistical platform such as SAS, SPSS, or R and familiarity with databases and business intelligence tools including data visualization tools, such as Gephi or Matlab, a plus.
Languages
English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. Fluency in spoken and written English is required for the Internship Programme. Knowledge of an additional official UN language is an asset. Arabic, Chinese, English, French, Russian and Spanish are the official languages of the United Nations Secretariat.
