Organizational Setting and Reporting
The United Nations Office for Disarmament Affairs (UNODA) is seeking suitably qualified interns for the winter/spring of 2014, with a starting date of 27 January 2014. The UNODA internship is for an initial period of two months and may be extended to a maximum of six months, depending on the needs of the department and the willingness of applicant.
The internship is UNPAID and full-time. Interns work five days per week (35 hours) under the supervision of a professional staff member in UNODA to whom they are assigned.
UNODA advises and assists the Secretary-General in the discharge of his responsibilities under the Charter of the United Nations and the mandates given by the General Assembly, the Security Council and other organs of the United Nations system, in the area of disarmament and related security matters, including through analytical briefs and assessments, and represents him as required.
Responsibilities
Daily responsibilities will depend on the individual's background; the intern's assigned office as well as the internship period. Interns, under the supervision of a political affairs officer shall undertake the following duties which may include, but are not limited to:
Assistance in drafting and preparing official documents, summaries, talking points, speeches, remarks and web content
Document, media and internet research
Assistance during conferences and meetings

Education
To qualify for an internship with the United Nations New York Headquarters Internship Programme, the following conditions must be met:
Applicants must be enrolled a graduate school programme (second university degree or higher); or
If pursuing their studies in countries where higher education is not divided into undergraduate and graduate stages, have completed at least four years of full-time studies at a university or equivalent institution towards the completion of a degree
Be computer literate in standard software applications (Microsoft Word, Excel and Powerpoint)
Have a demonstrated keen interest in the work of the United Nations and have a personal commitment to the ideals of the Charter; and
Have a demonstrated ability to successfully interact with individuals of different cultural backgrounds and beliefs, which include willingness to try and understand and be tolerant of differing opinions and views
Work Experience
Applicants are not required to have professional work experience for participation in the programme.
Languages
English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. Fluency in spoken and written English is required for the Internship Programme. Knowledge of an additional official UN language is an asset. Arabic, Chinese, English, French, Russian and Spanish are the official languages of the United Nations Secretariat.
