Context and Background
Merlin established an organisational presence in Myanmar in 2004, operating under a Memorandum of Understanding with the Ministry of Health. Merlin implements programmes in Ayeyarwaddy Region and in Chin State and Sagaing Region in the North-west with a country head office in Yangon. Merlin's activities include TB and malaria control projects, the Integrated Management of Maternal and Childhood Illness (IMMCI), Prevention of Sexually Transmitted Infection (STI) and Water, Sanitation and Hygiene Promotion (WASH). All of these are carried out as community based activities where improving access to essential health care and changing behaviour patterns operate side by side. In 2012, Merlin will expand its health programmes into Shan State. Merlin works with remote and isolated communities or communities affected by disasters and over the years Merlin has trained volunteer health workers and village health committees on the topics of TB, Malaria and Maternal and child health in order to improve access to basic health care. Merlin has worked on developing a demand driven model of both basic curative services and preventative behaviour practices that could be replicable in other areas of the country and so far this has had a significant positive impact upon the communities we support. In 2011, Merlin has been able to extend current funding and bring in new funding to the region which has allowed for a significant expansion of the coverage area.
