Senior Manager, Business Development & Analysis


The Intellectual Property Group (IPG) is responsible for the strategic management of Microsoft’s industry leading intellectual property portfolio. This includes building a strong and robust intellectual property asset base to advance Microsoft’s corporate strategy through acquisitions and divestitures, formation of joint-ventures and industry consortiums, and negotiation of complex cross-licensing agreements and strategic alliances. Strategic management efforts also encompass monetization of the patent portfolio through a variety of revenue programs.


The IPG Finance team is responsible for business development and strategy, management and oversight of equity investments, asset acquisitions and divestitures, portfolio management, as well as finance, operations and IT.


Key Accountabilities 

The ideal candidate will be responsible for providing financial and economic analysis support to the IP Licensing and Patent Legal teams, model financial terms, and provide market analysis for outbound, inbound and cross-license negotiations. In addition, the candidate will support activities related to the management of IP equity investments and asset valuation as well as analysis of target competitors. 


Specific accountabilities include:

• Complex IP asset acquisition/divestiture valuation and analysis, quantification of opportunities and risks 
• Scenario modeling for equity investment and patent monetization strategies
• Provide guidance and alignment during deal negotiations regarding financial statement impact by coordinating with corporate accounting, corporate finance, and the LCA / IPG accounting teams
• Communication of complex financial information and business concepts to senior leadership to support decision making 
• Competitive analysis inclusive of analyzing industry landscapes, market sizing and provision of regular updates on key competitors to senior leadership

• The job requires strong personal leadership, comfort with ambiguity, business acumen and ability to work with minimal oversight. The ability to orchestrate multiple processes as well as excellent senior executive communication and presentations skills are critical to success. 


Qualifications 

• A minimum of 7 years of relevant work experience. Investment banking or management consulting background preferred Demonstrated ability to build complex financial models and analysis of non-standard financial concepts 
• Proven ability to grasp complex or ambiguous business problems and create simple conclusions
• High personal standard to deliver a thoughtful, polished and quality work product
• BA/BS in quantitative financial discipline required; MBA in Finance or Marketing preferred
• Intellectual Property experience desirable but not required
