The Bridges Trade BioRes Editor leads ICTSD's communications to engage global environmental communities on the trade-related issues that affect them and trade policymakers on the environmental issues that relate to their areas of work. Both communities need to build knowledge and cross disciplinary understanding in order to pursue policies that support sustainable development.
The BioRes editor will advance the periodical's role as the authoritative information source on the intersecting fields of international trade and environmental issues, particularly as they related to governance frameworks. Acting as both a generator of context-enhanced news and original analysis from participants in the field, the editor will employ printed journals, social media and other channels to build knowledge and interaction that will lead to better global governance on issues where trade and environmental issues intersect. Drawing on ICTSD's global network and of issue experts and on an extensive internal knowledge exchange system involving deep programmatic work with negotiators and periodicals in six languages, the editor will be an active facilitator of collaborative relationships as well as a top flight journalist capable of translating complex ideas into meaningful written work that provides essential understanding for experts working in this area such as negotiators, academics, businesses, NGOs, parliamentarians, and the press.
Main Duties
Under the direction of ICTSD's Editor in Chief and Managing Editor the editor's duties will fall into several areas:
- Editorial Conception and Management
o Defining a rolling annual editorial plan and coherent editorial lines, series and approaches to building audience knowledge for both experts and field newcomers.o Managing an editorial process that generates new ideas, authors, feedback and quality control for articles.
- Writing and Editing
o Publish Bridges Trade BioRes Review (10 issues per year)o Commission and edit contributed analysis and commentary pieces to appear in Bridges Trade BioRes Review periodical;o Write, assign and edit brief and feature length news items to appear in the BioRes and BioRes news stream on a regular basis; (minimum 3 per week). Adapt and post into relevant social media including Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn.o Provide trade and environment-related reporting as needed from special events, such as UNFCCC COPs, CBD meetings, WTO Ministerial Conferences, WTO Public Forums, etc.o Maintain a high level of knowledge on a broad range of trade and environment issues (e.g., fisheries, climate change, forestry, biotechnology, intellectual property, sustainable energy, intellectual property);
- Collaboration
o Contribute to weekly editorial meetings by providing key news / analysis that is relevant to other editors;o Meet regularly with ICTSD programmatic staff to establish short and long-term storyboards that are current and reflective of emerging trade and environment issues;o Serve as a focal point for internal and external communication with regard to ICTSD's environment and natural resources, climate change, and renewable energy clusters;o Establish and manage an Editorial Advisory Board and engage this body to generate ideas and authors as well as to peer review articles.
- Strategy / Planning / Development
o Establish and update a BioRes strategic plan, detailing theory of change, key targets for change, metrics.o Establish a subscriber analysis and outreach plan; quarterly reporting against plan.o Lead in developing a funding base for BioRes
- Distribution
o Manage the Bridges Trade BioRes web portal;o Generate and send out bi-weekly news updates and monthly emails to the BioRes list.o Adapt and post stories to relevant social media.o Ensure copies of BioRes are prominent in other venues including social media and conferences by partners, major meetings, etc.
- Performance and Reporting
o Compile data and author information for quarterly and annual impact assessment reports for Bridges Trade BioRes;o Define and track relevant metrics that demonstrate impact.
- Layout, production
o Work closely with graphic designers during periodical layout to ensure established guidelines are observed;o Ensure quality production.
Requirements
- A strong personal and professional commitment to sustainable development ICTSD's mission.
- Demonstrated journalistic capacity. The editor must have the capacity and knowledge to write and edit professionally in English. Command of other languages is a benefit.
- The editor must have the ability to convey complex concepts and relationships, in a clear, technically correct manner to both expert and non-expert audiences from different backgrounds.
- Knowledge and experience in trade, environment, economic policy, and sustainable development and international policymaking processes and frameworks. The ideal candidate will have demonstrated grounding several of these areas.
- Creativity: ability to explore new ideas and emerging issues and to develop innovative approaches. Good research, analytical and problem-solving skills.
- Ability to conduct outreach and engagement both for authors and for audience development.
- Ability to set and meet deadlines regularly and to manage external authors to do the same.
- Teamwork: Good interpersonal skills; ability to establish and maintain effective working relations with ICTSD partner organizations; works collaboratively with ICTSD colleagues to achieve organizational goals. Ability and willingness to work with an internal (but geographically distributed) editorial team including issue experts who will help ensure that content is relevant and correct.
- Ability and willingness to work with layout and design professional to produce final products.
- Planning & organizing: ability to establish priorities and to plan, coordinate and monitor own work plan.
- Technical proficiency and capacity to work with web and electronic media.
- The editor must be conscientious and efficient in meeting commitments, observing deadlines and achieving results, ability to apply good judgment in the context of assignments given; ability to plan own work and manage conflicting priorities.
Performance Indicators
- Demonstrated increased relevance / value (as measured by surveys) among key audiences.
- Increased readership from key audiences.
- Increased interactivity via web and social channels.
- Increased references in other journals, negotiating documents, and other agreed indicators channels.
- Meet timelines on production.
- High quality writing and editing.
- Delivers complex ideas in a technically correct and easily accessible format that can be used by experts and non-experts alike.
- Establish a monthly a performance dashboard with relevant metrics.
- Established outreach and strategic plans.
