The Global Foundation Services (GFS) is an exciting and fast evolving operational group within Microsoft. GFS’ mission is to deliver industry leading core infrastructure and foundation technologies for Microsoft’s online services. The organization is responsible for strategy and delivery of the foundational platform for all Microsoft Online Services including data centers, networking equipment, bandwidth, operational infrastructure, and incident management. GFS supports over 200 online businesses including Bing, Hotmail, Xbox Live and Windows Azure branded services. Our infrastructure and associated practices are comprised of servers and data centers spread globally and applications that reach hundreds of millions of users every day. GFS’s Strategic Sourcing Group spearheads the acquisition of Microsoft’s global cloud infrastructure. We are looking for a strategic colocation planner who interacts closely with many constituents including Engineering teams, Finance and Legal as well as with outside vendors to design, develop, and deliver highly innovative contracts for networking equipment, fiber, collocation, peering, voice, and data services across the world. This position requires substantial knowledge of global colocation providers, in-depth technical expertise, and strategic analysis skills in addition to rock-solid negotiation, collaboration, and delivery capabilities. You have a track record that matches our philosophy of leading by innovation, have a detailed understanding of both the technological and the commercial sides of colocation infrastructure, and have the ability to deliver against aggressive deadlines with a driving passion for cost reduction and highly scalable solutions. Roles & Responsibilities:
This person will be instrumental in defining and delivering operational measures of success for cost, improving the planning process, quality, delivery, and sustainability related to the acquisition of technology and services related to 3rd party global colocation and local access providers throughout the world.
General operations business management will include the following:
- This person will own the responsibility to deliver on the overall sourcing strategy for these respective categories.
- Build strategic relationships with vendors; identify unique opportunities for partnership or expansion with these teams; determine specific routes and deals that meet commercial, technical, and timing requirements.
- Identify, negotiate and close contracts with vendors providing 3rd party colocation services inclusive of space, power, operations, support, servicing level guarantees, security and network access solutions. This person will analyze industry trends and evolving technology to proactively identify supply base issues to reduce cost, minimize risk, protect continuity of supply, and exploit emerging opportunities that benefit Microsoft.
- This person will identify, negotiate and close contracts with suppliers and vendors in tandem with business, technical and legal teams.
- This person must be able to work collaboratively with a variety of constituents including online service and GFS engineering groups as well as with many constituents from initial qualification to end-of-life.
- This person will be held accountable for achieving commitments on total cost results, quality and compliance adherence, and on-time delivery. You will communicate progress proactively and timely to many levels of the business hierarchy (engineers, finance, executive management, etc.).
Skills & Qualifications:
- Strong combination of business and technical knowledge base, including expertise in market analysis to dissect market size, players, customers, growth, technology replacements/forecasts, pricing trends, etc. to formulate sourcing strategies, particularly for specific spend commodities.
- Strong business acumen and entrepreneurial, hands-on spirit.
- Team player with deep cross-group collaboration and project management skills, with experience developing efficient work plans for complex projects involving many groups, and the ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously.
- Exceptional leadership, particularly in complex, international, and cross functional teams worldwide.
- Advanced conceptual, analytical, and problem-solving abilities.
- Ability to manage challenging expectations effectively and resolve conflicts efficiently.
- Exceptional interpersonal and communications (verbal and written) skills
- Relentless drive to overachieve and no excuses professional. Willing to travel 40-70% of the time.
Experience Required
- Bachelor's degree in engineering or business
- Six years of relevant work experience, including extensive experience with contract development and vendor management across many vendors simultaneously (preferably with large scale investments - multi hundred million portfolio)
- Three years of experience in networking technologies, as well as experience with strategic negotiations and/or business development obtaining services from high-technology providers in collocation data centers, internet transit, network transport, telecom, or IT services.
- Solid working understanding of domestic and global 3rd party colocation and local access solution providers
- Strong business case development, analysis and problem solving skills
- Excellent creative thinking skills with emphasis on developing innovative solutions to solve complex problems that may not have one clear answer
