Microsoft’s Online Services Division is creating a new team in our New England Research and Development Center focusing on domain independent language understanding. This team will design and implement internet scale services that understand conversational speech and text in a domain independent way. You will work with domain dependent language understanding teams in other locations to build compelling products. We are looking for Scientists and Engineers with backgrounds or experience in natural language processing, machine learning, machine translation, dialog modeling, natural language generation, speech recognition, and software development

Essential attributes and competencies include: 
Excellence in scientific thinking and execution with a deep understanding of multiple areas of current speech & language research. 
A proven track record of creating and guiding measurable improvements in speech & language technology. 
Ability to own and independently drive experimental definition, investigations, development and ultimately be responsible for the performance of key scenarios that enable the release of new Microsoft products and services. 
A passion for new UI paradigms incorporating speech & language technologies. 
Track record of consistent cross discipline impact 

Additional qualifications for this position include: 
PhD in CS/EE (with a focus in one or more of Spoken Language Understanding, Spoken Dialog Systems, Machine Learning, Language Modeling, Discourse Modeling, Inference and Reasoning) or equivalent experience. 
7+ years of Speech R&D in an Academic or Commercial setting.
