The Person and the job:
If you have the skills and passion to lead innovative research on the social and policy dimensions of water resources management that contributes to development outcomes, then you could be the person that the International Water Management Institute (IWMI) is looking
for to fill the position of Senior/Principal Researcher - Social/Political Sciences or Economics. The position holder will be based at the head-quarters of IWMI in Colombo, Sri Lanka, or in one of the Institute's country/regional offices in Asia and Africa. IWMI is currently formulating a new 5-year strategy and reorganizing its research theme structure. The selected candidate will have the opportunity to apply for the position of Theme Leader for one of IWMI's research themes later in the year.
You will:
- design and manage a portfolio of research in areas such as hydro-economics, the political economy of water investments, national or transboundary basin management, socioecology of groundwater, water policy and institutional reforms, and governance systems, particularly in the context of climate change at the basin, country and regional levels in Asia and Africa;
- provide leadership and strategic direction for other socioeconomic and institutional research activities in Asia and Africa on the impacts of water use and management on food security, livelihoods and the environment;
- contribute to interdisciplinary research projects involving hydrologists, agricultural water management researchers and environmental scientists in the West Africa office and across IWMI offices;
- identify new research trends and niches, and develop proposals for innovative research addressing socioeconomic, political and institutional issues in water and natural resource management in Asia and Africa;
- as part of a team, mobilize research funding to expand IWMI's work and influence policy on water and natural resource management;
- mentor and supervise staff;
- prepare research reports, journal articles, conference papers and other scientific manuscripts for the dissemination of research results;
- integrate research findings into effective policy recommendations and disseminate information through relevant guidelines and policy briefs;
- liaise between IWMI research activities, national and international partners, authorities, governments and donors; and
- contribute to IWMI's capacity building efforts in the area of policy analysis and institution building.
You will possess:
- a PhD majoring in sociology, anthropology, economics or political economy;
- a minimum of 8 years of postdoctoral experience and perhaps considerably more research experience on water, agriculture or natural resource management in developing countries;
- strong evidence as a key contributor of international repute to one or more of the scientific areas associated with the position, which is demonstrated by a strong publication record in peer-reviewed international journals, research impact and other
acknowledgements;
- a clear understanding of development challenges, especially in relation to poverty alleviation and food security;
- excellent communication skills that enable you to explain in simple terms;
- experience in international water management challenges and complex, interdisciplinary water issues;
- strong client orientation and commitment to demand-driven research that supports decision making and delivery of outcomes;
- a demonstrable track record of managing teams to deliver high-quality outputs on time and within budgets that address these information needs; and
- work experience in developing countries.
This is an internationally recruited position with a competitive salary and benefits package, which includes a housing allowance,
transport, education, shipping assistance, annual home leave, retirement and health insurance package. IWMI's policy is to appoint staff initially on three-year contracts which are subject to renewal,
depending on performance and the Institute's needs.
