Internship Opportunity
Church World Service (CWS) in New York City seeks an intern to perform event planning and administration. The intern will serve as a key member of the event committee, reporting to the Associate Director for Resource Generation on work related to CWS’ fall fundraising event taking place on November 21, 2013. The intern work on all elements of event planning and coordination, including RSVP lists, invitations, working with outside vendors on logistics, and conducting outreach to potential speakers or attendees. In addition, the law clerk will assist at the event itself, serving as a key point person for volunteers and staff members working at the event. The CWS Associate Director for Resource Generation will supervise and train the intern. This internship will be compensated at $7.25 per hour.
About the Organization
Church World Service (CWS) is a not-for-profit, international humanitarian assistance organization comprised of 37 member denominations and communions. The CWS/Immigration and Refugee Program provides assistance to displaced persons abroad and works with the State Department and 35 community organizations across the United States to resettle refugees fleeing persecution. CWS’ New York City office also provides low cost immigration legal services to the immigrants in the tri-state area seeking: legal advice, to apply for a green card or citizenship, or to help a family member immigrate to the US.
Requirements
Qualified applicants will be a third or fourth year undergraduate student or a recent college graduate. They must enjoy working in diverse work environments, demonstrate an ability to speak confidently in public, and be a self-starter. A positive attitude and commitment to the CWS mission is a must. Knowledge of nonprofit fundraising and/or event planning would be a plus. The intern must be a self-starter and be motivated to try new initiatives.
Commitment
The intern will commit to 8-10 hours per week from late August to late November 2013.
Rewarding Experience
From this experience, the intern will gain valuable nonprofit and development experience. They will work directly with vendors, Immigration & Refugee Program staff and honorees and attendees of the event, will learn key components of events management, and will gain public speaking and leadership skills. The intern will leave this experience not only with an understanding of events management and fundraising, but also a perspective on the issues immigrants and refugees face worldwide and how organizations like CWS work to assist and advocate for them.
