Background:
The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) is the United Nations' designated entity for addressing environmental issues at the global and regional level. Its mandate is to coordinate the development of environmental policy consensus by keeping the global environment under review and bringing emerging issues to the attention of governments and the international community for action. Located within the UNEP's Division of Technology, Industry and Economics, the Economics and Trade Branch (ETB) seeks to conserve the environment, reduce poverty, and promote sustainable trade and development. ETB works to enhance the capacity of governments, businesses, and civil society to integrate environmental considerations into economic, trade, and financial policies and practices in accordance with the partnership and integrated policy-making approaches of sustainable development .
ETB's Trade and Policy Unit seeks to identify opportunities at the crossroads of Green Economy and Trade, assist countries in harnessing their green trade potential, and participate in the global policy dialogue on trade and the environment.
Duties and Responsibilities:
The intern will work with the Trade and Policy Unit, focusing on research on the trade and environment nexus, identification of trade opportunities and challenges that arise from or can drive a transition to greener economies, trade and environmental implications of sustainability standards, environmental impacts and ecological footprint of trade, and/or assistance in national level assessment studies and capacity building activities on trade and green economy.
The intern will be working on the following tasks:
  • Carry out research, including data collection, on the trade and environment nexus
  • Prepare concept notes, briefings, project proposals and presentations on green economy and trade in general and for specific countries or sectors;
  • Contribute to the development of tools, methodologies and implementation guidance for trade-related country advisory services under the Green Economy Initiative;
  • Contribute in outreach activities such as conferences, meetings, web page management, newsletter and production of material;
  • Assist programme officers in other day-to-day activities.
Qualifications
The intern should have strong analytical skills and a sound understanding of the nexus of environment and trade. Previous work experience in the area of trade and/or environment is desirable. Excellent research and writing skills and a high degree of motivation and self-organization are required.
Education
Master's degree in Economics or Law (i.e. environmental or trade economics, environmental law , trade law etc.) or International Relations, Environmental Sciences , Social Sciences, or other related subjects, with specialization in the field of trade and/or environment.
Languages
Excellent writing and communication skills in English are required. Working knowledge of other UN official language(s) is desirable.
Remuneration
As a branch of the UN Environment Programme, UNEP-ETB is not able to provide any remuneration for internships. Interns should be enrolled in a university programme throughout their internship or have recently graduated.
