Background Information - Job-specific
The Sustainable Procurement Practice Group (SPPG) at UNOPS leads the organization's sustainable procurement practice and is responsible for all matters of organizational development in procurement and supply chain management. It is responsible for developing procurement strategies, policies, and processes. SPPG provides authoritative guidance and procurement advice. It enables oversight and develops procurement and supply chain knowledge networks and training tools to strengthen skills in public procurement while advancing sustainable practices. SPPG is also responsible for a significant percentage of the transactional procurement volume of UNOPS which totalled 740 Mio. USD in 2012.
The Partner Outreach and Development team at SPPG is responsible for identifying and reaching out to key partners and donors and for developing new business in sustainable procurement. It analyses the business model of UNOPS, matches it with key priorities of partners and donors and provides strategic recommendations on how to increase business. It liaises with the Global Partner Services Office (GPSO), other delivery practices as well as the regional offices to coordinate business development activities across the organization. It also provides direct support to procurement business developers in the field in terms of technical advice,the organization of workshops and acquisition.
UNOPS is looking for an intern to support the Partner Outreach and Development team in the areas of process analysis, business development and outreach. The intern will report to the Partner Outreach and Development Specialist. The intern will work in close collaboration with various stakeholders of the Sustainable Procurement Practice Group and other business units of UNOPS.
The intern will be assigned a peer at UNOPS who will be responsible for the successful induction of the intern at UNOPS. The SPPG team rotation policy applies, i.e. the intern may have the possibility to take stages in different teams of SPPG, depending on his or her skill set and the duration of the internship.
Functional Responsibilities
UNOPS is looking for an intern to assume duties related to the following work programme:
Business Analysis and Partner Outreach
Support the Partner Outreach and Development team with regard to data collection, research and analysis on specific topics of strategic interest for UNOPS SPPG such as donors priorities, aid dynamics, UNOPS business opportunities, etc.
This will comprise, but is not limited to, the following:
- Analyze strategic priorities and regional focus of identified key partners, such as bilateral donors, International Governmental Organizations (IGOs), International Finance Institutions (IFIs), NGOs and other such relevant donors;
- Conduct data collection, research and analysis in order to identify UNOPS references, methodologies, client information and major achievements in the area of procurement of infrastructure, pharmaceuticals and medical equipment and common user items, by reviewing UNOPS past project data/information and reaching out to the procurement officers/project managers when needed;
- Identify best practices and lessons learnt and document such findings in a standardized format;
- Design, coordinate and develop knowledge sharing methodologies and implement them across the organization;
- Manage and develop work planning tools such as work plans, action lists and other relevant tools to structure work packages, assign responsibilities and follow-up on the implementation of action items;
- Liaise with representatives from different UN agencies and provide logistical support to the practice management in organizing conferences, work shops and other relevant events;
- Propose measures to improve the visual appeal of business development materials such as presentations, flyers and brochures and coordinate with graphics and design service providers to implement such recommendations.
Process Analysis and Optimization - Corporate Credit Card Programme
Design and propose a corporate credit card programme for UNOPS which will also be offered to UNOPS external partners. This will comprise, but is not limited to, the following:
- Investigate and conduct research of the credit card industry with regards to corporate credit card programmes and related products and take stock of findings and existing knowledge;
- Conduct a comprehensive analysis and comparison of such products and options under considerations like potential and benefit to UNOPS and related cost and risks;
- Liaise with finance and legal department to identify and analyse any legal implications and liabilities of UNOPS offering a corporate credit card programme to its clients;
- Support the procurement process for any potential corporate credit card solution;
- Enable UNOPS external partners (especially small organizations without own credit line such as NGOs) to use the corporate credit card for paying for services provided by UNOPS;
- Identify and propose innovative cost-recovery models for such credit card applications;
- Propose and develop by-products of the proposed corporate debit/credit card programme such as reporting facilities on relevant parameters like spend per item, carbon foot print produced or buying pattern;
- Support the cross-departmental task force to kick start the implementation of the credit card program across the organization. Perform other related duties as required. Specific deliverables will be agreed upon based on the qualifications and skills of selected candidate together with the Partner Outreach and Development Specialist.

- Excellent analytical skills, in particular with regard to financial transactions, are required;
- Excellent computer skills, in particular substantial expertise with PowerPoint and Excel are required,experience in spreadsheet analyses using pivot tables, visual basic and other relevant applications is considered an asset;
- Excellent organizational skills;capacity to handle several projects at the time and determination to meet deadlines;
Education:
To be eligible for an internship with UNOPS, you must currently study towards a Bachelors or a Masters degree preferably in the field of Business Administration, Finance, Economics, International Development or related field or have completed a University degree in this field within the past 3 years.
Work experience: For an internship, no work experience is required. Language: Fluency in English and strong writing skills are required
Contract type, level and duration Contract type: Internship Contract duration: 3-6 months Interns at UNOPS do not receive any remuneration. As such, interns are responsible for all costs associated with the internship, including but not limited to costs for insurance coverage, travel and accommodation. However the interns may be eligible for a small stipend from UNOPS provided that they do not receive funds from other institutions.
