DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Organizational Settings
The incumbent will be working within the OHCHR Communication Section, in the Editorial Unit.
Responsibilities
Within the OHCHR Communication Section, in the Editorial Unit and under the supervision of the Unit's Head, the successful candidate will be responsible for the following duties:
Develop and coordinate major communications initiatives and campaigns, monitoring and reporting on progress, taking appropriate follow-up action, and analyzing the outcome; prepare and coordinate the production of information products (e.g. feature articles, web content, information kits, backgrounders, booklets, brochures, , etc.) in support of major campaign initiatives by proposing topics, undertaking research, determining appropriate medium and target audience, preparing production plans, writing drafts, obtaining clearances and finalizing texts, editing and coordinating design approval, printing procedures and dissemination; assist in the organization of events concerning communications initiatives; develop promotional materials, including design, by preparing and following up the tendering process, and coordinating the production with external providers; apply OHCHR's brand to public information products; act as focal point on specific human rights issues, monitor and report on developments, fulfill speaking engagements and make presentations and give briefings to external groups on OHCHR activities; respond to queries from the general public on the UN human rights programme; assist in selecting the information transmitted to key constituencies; perform other related duties as required by the Chief of the Communications Section.

Competencies
Professionalism– Solid knowledge of and practical experience in the full range of communications approaches, tools, and methodologies essential to prepare and coordinate the production of information products with emphasis on written materials; strong communications research and analytical skills.
Communication – Excellent communication (spoken, written, public speaking and presentational) skills, including ability to draft a variety of written communication products and to articulate ideas in a clear, concise style; ability to effectively interact with the public in communicating information and building/maintaining effective connections with targeted groups and the general public .
Planning and organizing – Ability to contribute to planning, organizing and implementing promotional publication programmes; ability to follow up necessary steps of comprehensive communication campaigns in support of defined objectives; capacity to juggle competing demands and work under pressure of frequent and tight deadlines.
Client orientation - Ability to establish and maintain professional relationships with key constituencies through different channels, including audiovisual and new media.
Teamwork – Ability to interact and to establish and maintain effective working relations with people of different national and cultural backgrounds with sensitivity and respect for diversity.
QUALIFICATIONS
Education
Advanced university degree (Master's degree or equivalent) in communication, journalism, international relations, public administration or related field. A first-level university degree in combination with qualifying experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced university degree.
Work Experience
At least 5 years of professional experience in journalism, public relations or communications. Experience at the international level will be an asset.
Languages
Fluency in written and spoken English. Knowledge of another UN language will be an asset.

Subject to the funding source of the position, this temporary job opening may be limited to candidates based at the duty station.
  • While this temporary assignment may provide the successful applicant with an opportunity to gain new work experience, the selection for this position is for a limited period and has no bearing on the future incumbency of the post. An external candidate selected for this position is bound by the prevailing condition of the staff selection system under ST/AI/2010/3 , as amended, and ST/AI/2010/4/Rev.1. A staff member holding a temporary appointment who is recruited in the Professional and above categories on a temporary appointment, and placed on a position authorized for one year or longer may not apply for or be reappointed to his/her current position within six months of the end of his/her current service. This provision does not apply to staff members holding temporary appointments and placed on positions authorized for one year or more in duty stations authorized for peacekeeping operations or special political missions.
