Organizational Setting and Reporting
This post is located in the Information Technology Section, Office of the Director, Division of Conference Management.
Responsibilities
Under the supervision of the Chief, Information Technology Section, the incumbent:
  • Coordinates and maintains computer hardware, software and network applications for language staff of the Languages Service of the Division of Conference Management in all six official languages of the United Nations
  • Assists personnel in their use; Ensures reliable and stable computer operation;
  • Supports use and introduction of new technologies in the work of personnel served, in particular assists users in the successful adoption of software, applications and tools used in the Languages Service.
  • Writes scripts using the operating systems software Windows, Novel for the configuration of workstations, printers, scanners and other devices on the LAN.
  • Ensures continuous operations of the LAN and the equipment attached to it, as well as stand-alone equipment.
  • Performs the software distribution updates, testing and support.
  • Maintains regular contact with users and technical staff in user officers and provides support as required,
  • Provides first level support to users (troubleshooting, advice) when necessary, liaises with the central computer support services and suppliers on problematic merits;
  • Ensures adequate preparation and upgrading of documentation and training to users.
  • Provides support in the planning, specification, design, development, implementation and maintenance of customized application software systems,
  • Performs more complex hardware and software configuration tasks such as creating standard images.
  • Diagnoses network problems and ensures that security procedures, including backups of data and programs on the LAN.
  • Provides support on software developments matters, including security, data integrity and recovery;
  • Assists with needs assessment for new systems (including modifications to existing systems),
  • Performs ongoing reviews with users and developers and respond to requirements requests;
  • Implements, provides operational support and maintains various applications.
  • Liaises at technical level with the UNOG Equipment Procurements Sub-Unit concerning equipment and software deliveries.
  • Supervises a team for providing IT services to the Languages Service and coordinates the work with technicians of the Languages Service
  • Administers and maintains the electronic mailing system, specifically in the context of the Lotus Domino platform.
  • Administers and maintains the electronic leave request system.
  • Performs other related duties as required.

Education
Completion of secondary school or its equivalent technical or commercial school. Must have passed the Administrative Assessment Support Test (ASAT).
Work Experience
At least 7 years of experience in the networking hardware, software and PC support, of which two years preferably within the United Nations. Qualifying years of experience are calculated following the receipt of the secondary school diploma or equivalent diploma.
Languages
Fluency in English and French.
Assessment Method
Competency-based interview. A written assessment may be conducted.
Special Notice
Staff members are subject to the authority of the Secretary-General and to assignment by him or her. In this context, all staff are expected to move periodically to new functions in their careers in accordance with established rules and procedures.
Recruitment for this position is done on a local basis, whether or not the candidate is a resident of the duty station. Passing the Administrative Assessment Support Test (ASAT) at Headquarters or an equivalent recognises locally-administered test at a United Nations Office is a prerequisite for recruitment consideration in the General Service category in the United Nations Secretariat.
Appointment against this post is on a local basis and is open only to those who have been successful in the relevant entry level examination identified above.
