Description
Makerere University Business School (MUBS) is a Public Tertiary Institute affiliated to Makerere University with the mandate to provide business and management education in the country. MUBS seeks to attract and retain talented individuals in a positive, diverse, healthy and safe work environment. Applications are invited from suitably qualified Ugandans to fill vacant positions of School Secretary, School Librarian, School Legal Officer and School Estates Manager in Makerere University Business School service.
POST PROFILE FOR THE POSITION OF SCHOOL LEGAL OFFICER
The job holder shall be responsible for the effective and efficient management of the Legal Section of the School, provision of legal advisory services and ensure effective management of legal and contractual risks.
KEY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
1. Provide leadership and ensure efficient and effective management of the staff and resources in the Legal Section.
2. Provide legal advisory and interpretation services to management and Council to ensure statutory compliance with existing laws and regulatory requirements.
3. Review and draft contracts, agreements and internal policies and ensure that they are in compliance with all statutory or legal requirements.
4. Review progress of outstanding litigation and liaise with and manage external lawyers.
5. Continuously monitor compliance with statutory obligations and advise management.
6. Prepare monthly and quarterly reports for the Section for the consideration of management
7. Prepare, negotiate, review and draft documentation for business transactions and prepare and advise management in compliance with all statutory or legal requirements.
8. Provide continuous leadership, supervision, training and development of Section staff ensuring an effective and motivated team.
9. Provide legal protection and risk management advice to management especially on contract management.
10. Liaise with the HR department in conducting performance appraisals and ensure competency and training gaps are addressed.
11. Follow-up and update management on court matters and attending court hearings for and on behalf of the School.
12. Review and advice on MOUs between MUBS and other organizations including donors.
13. Assume any other duties as may be assigned from time to time by the Principal.

11. Must be familiar with the legal framework of the Higher Education Sub-sector in Uganda.
PERSON SPECIFICATION:
1. An Honors. Bachelor of Laws (LL.B) and Diploma in Legal Practice or its equivalent from (a) reputable Institution(s).
2. Must be a citizen of Uganda aged between 30 and 50 years.
3. Must be an enrolled advocate of the High Court of Uganda.
4. Must possess a valid practicing certifi cate.
5. At least four (4) years experience in an increasinglyresponsible position in a medium-sized organization.
6. Possession of a Master of Laws degree from a reputable institution will be an added advantage.
REMUNERATION:
An attractive remuneration package shall be paid in accordance with the MUBS Terms and Conditions of service.
TENURE OF APPOINTMENT: A five (5) year contract, renewable once, subject to good performance.
