Organizational Setting and Reporting
The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) is the United Nations system's designated entity for addressing environmental issues at the global and regional level. Its mandate is to coordinate the development of environmental policy consensus by keeping the global environment under review and bringing emerging issues to the attention of governments and the international community for action. At the 1992 Earth Summit in Rio de Janeiro, world leaders agreed on a comprehensive strategy for 'sustainable development'. One of the key agreements adopted at Rio was the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD). The Convention establishes three main goals: the conservation of biological diversity, the sustainable use of its components, and the fair and equitable sharing of the benefits from the use of genetic resources. This post is located in UNEP/SCBD, Montreal, Canada. Under the overall guidance of the Executive Secretary and under the direct supervision of the Senior Programme Officer response for the programme on Access and Benefits Sharing (ABS), the incumbent will perform the following functions:
Responsibilities
  • Carryout awareness-raising activities in collaboration with Communication, Education and Public Awareness Programme (CEPA) of the Convention and with other partners, addressing different target groups and stakeholders to support the ratification, early entry into force and implementation of the protocol;
  • Organize and carry out capacity –building and development activities in collaboration with the other staff members of the Se
  • cretariat and relevant organizations institutions to support the ratification, early entry into force and implementation of the Nagoya Protocol;
  • Contribute to the development of the strategic framework for capacity building and development under the Nagoya Protocol including preparing and servicing the expert meeting , third meeting of the Intergovernmental Committee for the Nagoya Protocol and the first meeting of the Conference of the Parties serving as the meeting of the Parties to the Protocol;
  • Prepare and service other inter sessional meetings, including expert meetings in preparation for the third meeting of the intergovernmental committee for the Nagoya Protocol and the first meeting of the Conference of the Parties serving as the meeting of the Parties to the Protocol;
  • Coordinate and promote the exchange of views and experiences among Parties on the state of the ratification and implementation of the Nagoya Protocol for providing inputs to the third meeting of the Intergovernmental Committee for the Nagoya
  • Protocol in preparation for the first meeting of the Conference of the Parties serving as the meeting of the Parties to the Protocol; and Undertake other activities as assigned by the Executive Secretary

Education
  • Advanced university degree in environmental science or related area is required.
  • A first-level university degree in environmental science or environmental management, or related fields in combination with two additional years of qualifying experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced university degree.
Work Experience
  • A minimum of five years experience of progressively responsible work experience in the field of environmental project/programme management or related area is required.
  • Experience with the CBD Secretariat or UNEP is an advantage.
Languages
  • English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat.
  • For the post advertised, fluency in oral and written English is required.
  • Working knowledge of another UN language is desirable.
Assessment Method
  • The evaluation of qualified applicants may include an essay assessment exercise which may be followed by a competency-based interview.
