Basic purpose
The successful candidate will contribute to the TRB (Transforming Rice Breeding Efficiency) project by contributing to an on-going efforts to (1) identify and characterize target domains for dissemination of rice varieties in South Asia based on biophysical and socio-economic conditions (2) and identify priority traits (agronomic, stress tolerance and grain quality) needed in these target domains. The successful candidate will work in a multidisciplinary team setting and will be a part of the Market Research Team. He/She will closely collaborate with IRRI specialists in rice breeding, value chain and crop health.
This position is based in IRRI Headquarters, Los Baños, Laguna, Philippines.
Roles and responsibilities
  • Compile and organize data needed in developing and prioritizing rice breeding product profiles in South Asia.
  • Develop, apply and validate methods for assessing rice areas in South Asia that are prone to stresses such as salinity and other problem soils.
  • Based on data compiled from various sources and derived through modeling, identify and characterize spatially explicit target domains for dissemination of rice varieties in South Asia.
  • Contribute to enhancing the technical capabilities of partners and collaborators to use advanced tools and methods for spatial analysis through training and collaborations.
  • Publish research results in international journals.
  • Supervise and train a small number of national staff.
Qualification requirements:
PhD in GIS/Geography/remote sensing, production ecology or systems analysis with a strong emphasis on GIS, quantitative methods and statistics;Three to five years of relevant experience. Skills and Knowledge:
  • Excellent skills in spatial analysis, data management and modelling;
  • Strong quantitative skills;
  • Record of quality publications;
  • Excellent spoken and written proficiency in English;
  • Very good interpersonal and communication skills;
  • Demonstrated ability to work in a multicultural team-oriented environment.
