Organization: UN High Commissioner for Refugees
Country: Syrian Arab Republic
Closing date: 18 Feb 2014
Background:
As the crisis in Syria continues, so have the humanitarian needs continued to increase. More than 6.5 million people are displaced with an estimated 9.3 million people in need of humanitarian assistance. The focus of the UNHCR operation within Syria has had to shift from serving the mass influx of refugees that came predominantly from Iraq to being the lead-agency responsible for Protection, Core Relief Items and Shelter for IDPs. Reporting on the situation and response is both challenging and complex. With the situation within Syria almost constantly on the news, and with a plan to spend 2.2 billion dollars on Humanitarian Assistance in 2014, the UN is under constant pressure to deliver but also to tell the story of the situation, the challenges, the delivery and distribution.
UNHCR has almost 400 staff inside Syria. The Associate Reporting Officer will be hired through UNOPS and would work in a team of 6, with a Reporting Officer, a national Reporting Associate, a graphic designer, a Mapping (GIS) IM Associate and an Administrative Assistant. Please also see on Refworld a UNHCR Document entitled UNHCR Syria: 2013 in review for more information about the Operation.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Keep abreast of all developments in relation to Humanitarian Assistance within Syria to prepare appropriate briefings and reports.
  • Liaise closely with all Units in the country in order to gather and collate accurate data about assistance activities;
  • Act as a backup to the Reporting Officer in the creation of weekly internal reports, briefing packages for the Representative's outgoing meetings, briefing notes for high-level members of staff and external relations officers in the region on Syria, briefing packages for high-level visitors to Syria and updating the PowerPoint presentation of the operation.
  • Collaborate closely with UN OCHA information office and other agencies so as to ensure a smooth exchange of information between UNHCR and the UNCT. In particular, actively contribute to the regular OCHA updates as well as to any urgent requests from OCHA and other UN agencies.
  • Help establish, document review and refine process of working collaboratively with partners, including meetings, joint projects information sharing etc.
  • Assist in creating and updating standard operating procedures within the Reporting Unit.
  • Work closely with GIS to ensure accurate and attractive data presentation on the maps;
  • Draft and/or check all reports from management;
  • Perform other duties as required
