Background Information - MACMine Action Cluster Based in New York, the UNOPS Mine Action Cluster provides a range of mine action services in emergency and post-conflict settings, on behalf of the United Nations, governments and other partners. Established in 1997 and part of the UNOPS Global Partner Services Office, the Mine Action Cluster has helped partners significantly improve the lives of people in more than 30 countries around the world. It delivers fast and efficient procurement, recruitment and management services to facilitate humanitarian aid and launch emergency mine clearance. The cluster is also responsible for the administrative oversight of its field offices, in line with partner requirements and UNOPS rules and regulations.
The United Mine Action Programme in Côte d'Ivoire is adhering to the most recent extension of the United Nations Operation in Côte d'Ivoire (UNOCI) mandate authorized by the Security Council in its resolution 2112 (2013). The mine action intervention commenced in April 2011, in the wake of the post-election crisis in the country. At the request of the United Nations Mine Action Service (UNMAS), the United Nations Office for Project Services (UNOPS) is providing mine action support to the DDR and SSR divisions of the United Nations Operations in Côte d'Ivoire (UNOCI); coordinating all mine action activities including survey and clearance of Explosive Remnants of War (ERW); and working in partnership with national security forces to improve Physical Security and Stockpile Management (PSSM).
Functional Responsibilities
The Driver shall report directly to the Support Service Officer (SSO), s/he will contribute by furnishing reliable and safe driving services for the transport of authorized personnel. The Driver has a client-oriented approach, high sense of responsibility, courtesy, tact and the ability to work with people of different national and cultural backgrounds. The incumbent is responsible to abide by security policies, administrative instructions, plans and procedures of the UN Security Management System and that of UNOPS. Below are some of the functionalities:
- Ability to drive and travel within Programme's area of operations.
- Good knowledge of the area and the current condition of roads and highways, security and safety awareness; ability to apply good judgment in the context of assignments given.
- Assist the Programme by accomplishing tasks related to vehicle safety, safe driving conditions, vehicle maintenance, etc.;
- Ability to troubleshoot and resolve routine mechanical problems, referring complex issues to SSO with recommendations for course of action.
- Provides reliable and secure driving services by a) driving vehicles safely for the transport of authorized personnel in Abidjan and throughout the country as necessary and, in the case of peacekeeping missions, for the transport of cargo goods and/or hazardous goods vehicles; b) collecting and delivering mail, documents and other items; and c) meeting official personnel at the airport and facilitating immigration and customs formalities as required;
- Ensures proper use of vehicle(s) through accurate maintenance of daily vehicle logs, provision of inputs to preparation of the vehicle maintenance plans and reports;
- Responsible for the day-to-day maintenance of the assigned vehicle (s) by performing VHU/UHF Radio checks, checking oil, water, battery, brakes, tires, etc.; performing minor repairs and arranging for major repairs; and ensuring that the vehicle(s) are kept clean;
- Ensures availability of all the required documents/supplies including vehicle insurance as applicable, vehicle logs, office directory, map of the city/country, first aid kit, and necessary spare parts;
- Ensures that immediate steps as required by rules and regulations are taken in case of involvement in an accident in regards to national laws as well as UNOPS/ONUCI guidelines and directives as may be applicable;
- Continuous interaction with the Logistics Associate, other colleagues and partners to exchange information on issues and seek co-operation.
- High level of commitment during peak periods (e.g., work longer hours and outside office hours if necessary).
- Perform other related duties as required.

Education/Experience/Language requirementsHigh school diploma or equivalent with 4 years overrall work experience as a driver. Driving: Excellent knowledge of driving rules and regulations 4 year minimum required. Vehicles/Fleet Management:Ability to maintain and provide low level mechanical service to the Programme's vehicle fleet. Inspection: Ability to provide daily, weekly and monthly inspections to all vehicles. Reporting: Ability and report any incidents, accidents and/or vehicle damages to direct supervisor. Support Services: Ability to provide all type of support in relation to driving functions. Candidate must have a valid driver's licence to be considered for this position. Language: fluency in oral and written French is required for this position. Knowledge of English would be an asset.
