An opportunity has arisen for an energetic, well-organized, responsible, community minded person who enjoys interacting with a wide range of people to work with a skilled and experienced team of researchers and technical staff as part of their team. Based in Auki this person will co-ordinate activities with communities in Malaita (particularly North Malaita) to support their action plans and co-ordinate partnerships with researchers from WorldFish and other organizations.
Key responsibilities include:
  • Work closely with rural communities to monitor and support community action plans around fisheries management and agriculture
  • Act as the community contact person in the Auki office
  • Co-ordinate partnerships with training providers
  • Assist research team to conduct community and household surveys
  • Collect narratives with communities and work with communications team to prepare products suitable for communities' use
  • Arrange field trip logistics for action research teams
  • Manage field trip funds and providing timely and accurate acquittals
  • Write trip and project reports and contribute to a range of communications products
  • Conduct workshops, prepare relevant material needed for training/ workshop/ conference presentations
  • Communicate project findings, problems and successes with supervisor, team members in Honiara and project leader in a timely manner
Candidates are sought with:
  • Bachelor's Degree in development, social science, agriculture, fisheries or geography.
  • Practical experience in working with communities
  • Have a strong interest in implementing strength based approaches to community development of Aquatic Agricultural Systems (fisheries, aquaculture and agriculture)
  • Flexible, willing to learn, and able to work across a range of projects and activities
  • Must be able to spend time working in rural communities
  • Have a high level of interpersonal and communication skills in English and in Pidgin, and the ability to communicate effectively with rural communities and their leaders
  • Familiar with Microsoft Office and be able to write effective field trip reports
  • Have the necessary skills to have responsibility for, and acquit, funds required to support field activities
  • Must be prepared to join a hard working team who are committed to enhancing the lives of Solomon Islanders through improved coastal fisheries management and aquaculture development.
