POSTDOCTORAL FELLOW – HYDROGEOLOGY AND

The person and the job:The International Water Management Institute (IWMI) (www.iwmi.org) is looking for a person with a PhD in hydrogeology, hydrol-ogy, water resources management or a related discipline, which was awarded not more than 5 years ago. The person should alsohave an in-depth knowledge of subsurface hydrology and integrated water resources assessments, and modeling at the catchmentor aquifer scale. The position holder will be based at IWMI's Southern Africa office in Pretoria, South Africa, and the work will focuson groundwater and water resources in Sub-Saharan Africa (SSA). The incumbent will work under the guidance of the SeniorResearcher - Groundwater Management, who is responsible for IWMI's groundwater-related work in SSA.
You will:
- develop and apply integrated hydrogeological model(s) for national or transboundary aquifers and river basins in SSA;
- interpret and apply hydrogeological data for modeling of specific aquifers and associated basins;
- apply and integrate geographic information system (GIS) and remote sensing tools, methods and datasets in modeling of water resources availability and management;
- apply modeling tools at more local level to assess and optimize options for storage and conjunctive use of groundwaterand surface water within water-stressed regions in SSA (this could be as part of existing irrigation schemes or in newmultiple-use peri-urban schemes);
- contribute to the derivation of recommendations and policy advice based on the research; andprepare journal articles, research reports and conference papers.
You will possess:
- a PhD in hydrogeology, hydrology, water resources management or a related field (the PhD should have been awardednot more than 5 years prior to the time of application);
- an in-depth understanding of aquifer hydrogeology and basin hydrology;
- experience in integrated aquifer/basin processes modeling;
- knowledge of conjunctive use of groundwater and surface water to optimize use of limited water resources, preservewater quality and enhance livelihoods;knowledge and competency in the application of GIS and remote sensing techniques to hydrological problems;strong analytical and numerical skills, and the ability to process large temporal and spatial datasets;
- independent and critical scientific thought;a good command of spoken and written English;the ability to effectively establish priorities, and plan, organize, implement and monitor work activities; and
- good interpersonal skills and the ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with people in amulticultural and multi-disciplinary environment, with sensitivity and respect for diversity.
It would be useful if you have:
- knowledge of agricultural and water management issues in Africa, and also in transboundary river and aquifer basins;
- interest in socioeconomic and poverty implications of water development and management;
- work experience in developing countries; and
- a proven record of relevant peer-reviewed articles in international journals, where the applicant is the first author.
