EM/POL Polio Eradication
OBJECTIVES OF THE PROGRAMME :
Purpose of the Post:
To provide technical support to the national as well as regional teams to develop, implement and evaluate Polio Eradication activities, both Acute Flaccid Paralysis (AFP) surveillance, Supplementary Immunization Activities (SIAs) and routine
Expanded Programme of Immunization (EPI).
Objectives of the Programme:
To eradicate polio from Afghanistan through routine, (SIAs) and highly sensitive surveillance system for (AFP).
Description of duties:
Organizational Context:
Under the direct supervision of the Medical Officer Polio and overall guidance of the WHO Representative, the incumbent will work within the framework of national policies and guidelines defined in WHO program and policy documents.
Summary of assigned duties:
The incumbent will perform the following duties:
1. Assist in planning, implementing and monitoring of Supplementary immunization activities (SIAs) in the field.
2. Undertake frequent travels to different regions of the country particularly the Southern region to supervise SIAs, oversee the process of different types of data collection and timely analysis for its use and prepare country SIAs reports.
3. Take all necessary measures to ensure achievements/ maintenance of high vaccination coverage, particularly in the low performing districts.
4. Undertake regular performance reviews including weekly analysis of AFP surveillance data, in order to identify and overcome technical and performance bottle necks and build the epidemiological capacity of the field staff through technical assistance.
5. Update guidelines, training modules and other material and assist in the development of monitoring and evaluation tools.
6. Facilitate training and other capacity building activities for national staff and suggest measures for its appropriate training on newly introduced interventions.
7. Strengthen surveillance for other vaccine preventable disease; ensure appropriate monitoring of routine EPI activities and timely analysis of routine EPI data for corrective action.
8. Assist the Medical Officer on any other related task assigned and to submit a monthly report on the activities undertaken.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
Education:
Essential:
- University Degree in Medicine.
Desirable:
- Post graduate qualifications in Epidemiology / Public Health.

Functional Skills and Knowledge:
Sound technical knowledge on epidemiology and surveillance of vaccine preventable; prevention and control measures and preparedness and response.
Ability to establish harmonious working relations with national counterparts and international colleagues.
Other Skills: Proficiency in MS Office, EPI info statistical software.
Experience:
Essential:
- At least two years working experience in EPI/ Polio eradication or Primary Health Care with public/private sectors, NGOs and UN agencies.
Languages:
- Excellent knowledge of English and local language.
