The role
The Communications Manager is responsible for the implementation of a global communications strategy and ensuring a clear understanding of the purpose, goals and achievements of the Education Global Initiative across all members, country and regional offices. S/he will play a critical role in ensuring that we develop clear and effective internal and external communications tools in order to increase the impact of our education work for children across the whole organisation.
In the event of a major humanitarian emergency, the role holder will be expected to work outside the normal job description and be able to vary working hours accordingly.
Qualifications and experience
  • Communications specialist with experience of working in complex organisations at a mid- management level.
  • Masters level qualifications and experience in development organisation at a strategic level required.
  • Experience of working in developing countries preferred.
  • Knowledge of or experience within the education sector an asset
Communications
  • Recent practical experience in a communications role within an international organisation.
  • Experience of social media and online knowledge management tools would be a strong advantage.
  • Ability to produce attractive, concise and accurate policy briefs for an international audience.
  • Ability to communicate information and ideas effectively to an international audience.
  • Ability to think strategically and to use communication tools creatively to achieve agreed objectives.
  • Ability to analyse and synthesise complex information from different sources and tailor it for different audiences
  • Creativity and imagination and experience of preparing high quality visual and written materials.
Planning
  • Able to deliver high quality products to tight deadlines.
  • Strong time management skills with an ability to plan ahead, identify challenges and find solutions.
  • Highly organised with the ability to juggle competing priorities successfully, and to meet deadlines.
  • Ability to work on own initiative without close supervision.
Management
  • Excellent influencer with ability to unite colleagues behind an idea or product.
  • Strong interpersonal and negotiation skills with proven experience of relationship management and ability to engage stakeholders within a matrix structure
  • Strong analytical skills and ability to think strategically in order to achieve organisational goals
  • Ability to gauge whether to take or refer the necessary decisions for progressing work and act where appropriate
  • Team work
IT
  • Fluency required in all major IT and communications programs.
  • Familiarity with a CMS and/or HTML would be desirable.
  • Experience of use of social media for internal and external communications would be an advantage.
  • Experience of SharePoint would be an advantage.
Personal skills
  • Advanced oral and written fluency in English is essential. The ability to work in a second language would be a strong advantage, in particular, Arabic, French or Spanish.
  • Self- motivated and able to work with high degree of autonomy.
  • Good team member.
  • Able to respond positively to pressure.
  • Committed to the aims and objectives of Save the Children.
This role will be offered as a maternity cover initially for 8 months.
