Role Overview
The EBRD’s Office of the General Counsel is at the core of EBRD’s challenging mandate to support the transition process in the 29 emerging markets of central and eastern Europe, including the Russian Federation, and central Asia. It handles all legal aspects of the EBRD’s lending and investment transactions, all legal aspects of the EBRD’s finance operations, including its borrowings in the international capital markets, liquid asset investments and derivative transactions, provides legal advice for institutional and administrative matters, and implements a legal technical assistance programme to support the legal transition process in the region.
In addition the EBRD has been asked by its shareholders to extend its activities to the countries of the Southern and Eastern Mediterranean (in particular Egypt, Jordan, Morocco and Tunisia) following the ‘Arab Spring’.
The Bank is seeking an outstanding new lawyer for its legal department (Office of the General Counsel) to join the department’sAssociate Programme. The successful candidate will have the opportunity to contribute appropriate country, language and academic knowledge, and to gain experience by working in the Office of General Counsel to facilitate the EBRD’s operations.
The successful candidate will be offered a 2 year fixed term contract, beginning on or around 1 September 2013, allowing him/her to benefit from training the relevant legal and transaction skills.
Key Responsibilities and Deliverables
The unit where the new Associate will work is OGC Finance. This unit provides legal assistance to the Treasury Department and other units within the Finance Vice Presidency and advises on:-- Borrowing operations under the Bank’s Global MTN programme, CP note issuing programme and other types of funding operations both in the international capital markets and in the Bank’s region of operations.
- Derivatives and capital market operations in established and emerging markets (including derivatives, repo and other master agreements).
- Other Treasury matters requiring legal advice.
Essential Skills, Experience & Qualifications
Candidates who have earned a law degree from a leading university in one of the following jurisdictions are eligible to apply: Albania, Armenia, Azerbaijan; Belarus, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Bulgaria, Croatia, Czech Republic, Estonia, Egypt FYR Macedonia, Georgia, Hungary, Jordan, Kazakhstan, Kosovo, Kyrgyzstan, Latvia, Lithuania, Moldova, Mongolia, Montenegro, Morocco, Poland, Romania, Russian Federation, Serbia, Slovak Republic, Slovenia, Tajikistan, Tunisia, Turkey, Turkmenistan, Ukraine and Uzbekistan, provided that they have additionally earned a post graduate law degree (e.g., LLM degree) from a leading university in a second jurisdiction or obtained professional experience in a second jurisdiction.
Languages: Excellent English skills, including English language drafting, negotiating and presentation skills, additionally to the candidate’s mother tongue. Additional languages, in particular Russian, Arabic, or other language spoken in Central and Eastern European or in the Southern and Eastern Mediterranean region, would be an asset.
