TERMS OF REFERENCE
UNHCR´s operation in Ecuador started in 2000 as part of the organization's strategy to protect and assist the victims of the Colombian conflict. The operation aims to support the Ecuadorian government in strengthening protection mechanisms, developing asylum and identifying solutions. UNHCR has its main office in Quito and field offices in Lago Agrio, Esmeraldas, Tulcán, Ibarra, Guayaquil, and antenna offices in Cuenca and Santo Domingo. The operation focuses on providing international protection for refugees, supporting the state in its endeavours in favour of refugee protection, distribution of humanitarian aid and public information initiatives.
The internship will take place in the UNHCR antenna office in the city of Cuenca.
Duties and Responsibilities
Under direct supervision of the Senior Field Assistant in Cuenca, the Intern will:
  • Supporting the partners in the identification of persons with specific needs and defining the response;
  • Accompanying partner agencies to home visits to refugees and asylum seekers;
  • Conducting short information and/or orientation interviews with asylum-seekers and refugees;
  • Providing logistical support to the Resettlement and Programme Units when and as necessary;
  • Provide technical support to the Protection Unit for the follow-up of sensible cases;
  • Conducting protection filter interviews to assess durable solution possibilities with people of concern along with the legal partner agency;
  • Documenting cases of violation of rights for the Protection Assistant;
  • Providing backup for the Senior Field Assistant when on mission;
  • Contributing to reporting activities to UNHCR Quito when and as required;
  • Maintain databases up-to-date;
  • Performing other duties as required.
How to apply:
Requirements:
  • University degree in Law, International Law, Political Science, Psychology or related field.
  • Knowledge of the humanitarian situation in Colombia.
  • Excellent written and spoken Spanish is indispensable for the post; English (written and spoken) is a requirement to perform duties.
  • Excellent drafting and analytical skills (English and Spanish).
  • Able to work on own initiative and as a part of a team.
  • Able to work to deadlines.
