Background:
The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) is the United Nations system's designated entity for addressing environmental issues at the global and regional level. Its mandate is to coordinate the development of environmental policy consensus by keeping the global environment under review and bringing emerging issues to the attention of governments and the international community for action. UNEP's Division of Technology, Industry and Economics (DTIE) works with international and nongovernmental organizations, national and local governments, business and industry to develop and implement policies, strategies and practices that are cleaner and safer, incorporate environmental costs, use natural resources efficiently, reduce pollution and risks for humans and the environment, and enable the implementation of conventions and international agreements. Located within the United Nations Environment Programme's Division of Technology, Industry and Economics, the Economics and Trade Branch (UNEP-ETB) seeks to conserve the environment, reduce poverty, and promote sustainable development by enhancing the capacity of governments, businesses, and civil society to integrate environmental considerations into economic, trade, and financial policies and practices in accordance with integrated policy-making approaches of sustainable development. Over the past years, the focus of ETB has been UNEP's work related to Green Economy.
Duties and Responsibilities:
The intern will work with UNEP-ETB's Research and Partnership Unit. The position will be linked to the following streams of UNEP's Green Economy work:
  • Measuring progress towards a Green Economy: developing and designing policy guidelines for GE indicators at the global and national levels;
  • Macro economic policy for a Green Economy: fiscal policy reform, green investment, technological change and innovation policy, and green jobs;
  • South-South Cooperation and knowledge exchange on different national approaches to enhancing the transition to a low-carbon, resource-efficient economy.
More specifically, the job will entail the following tasks:
  • Prepare concept notes and short briefings in the above-mentioned areas;
  • Carry out background research, including data collection;
  • Assist with the overall implementation of research projects;
  • Prepare communication material and support outreach activities;
  • Assist with the organization of workshops and conferences.
Qualifications
The candidate should have strong analytical skills and a sound knowledge of the nexus of environmental issues and economics. Previous work experience in the area of green economy and/or climate change would be a valuable asset. Excellent research and writing skills and a high degree of motivation and self-organization are required.
Education
Final year undergraduate or master's degree student in Economics, International Relations, Environmental Sciences, Social Sciences or a related area. We can also accept recent graduates if they are still able to receive an endorsement of their university.
Languages
Excellent writing and communication skills in English are required. Working knowledge of other UN official languages is desirable.
Remuneration
As a Unit of the United Nations Environment Programme, UNEP-ETB is not able to provide any remuneration for internships.
