THE POSITION
Under the supervision of the News Editor, External Relations, the Copy Editor will be assigned, but not necessarily limited, to the following duties:
  • Proof-read, edit, rewrite, collate and repurpose copy as necessary for IDLO publications, web content and other material, including official statements;
  • Produce copy that is clear and concise, grammatically flawless and syntactically sound;
  • Maintain editorial standards to protect the organisation's brand; make copy stylistically elegant, hard-hitting and topical;
  • Ensure consistency of voice so that IDLO's presence in social media and other platforms remain useful to stakeholders;
  • Conduct training in editing and advice on good writing techniques to other team members;
IDEAL CANDIDATE PROFILE
Education
  • University degree either in Mass Communication / Journalism / Social Sciences / Marketing or relevant studies is required.
Experience
  • Minimum 3 - 4 years of professional experience as a copy editor/writer, preferably within an international or news-oriented setting is essential.
Technical competencies
  • Proven editing abilities including aesthetics, copy and formatting, with a passion for the language(s);
  • A brevity artist, a headline crafter, an eye for details.
  • Proven ability to write and edit a wide range of materials including speeches, leaflets, briefing papers, web pages, press releases, newsletters and in-depth reports.
  • Ability to understand complex issues and the ability to articulate them in a simple, easyto-read way for a varied audience.
  • Sound knowledge and interest in current global affairs.
  • Ability to train and support respective team members and foster teamwork approach.
  • Sound knowledge of editorial principles and journalism ethics.
  • Good IT skills including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, ability to use digital media.
Language
  • Proven competence in the fluent use of written and verbal communication skills in English. Fluency in at least one other language (French, Spanish, Arabic, Russian and Chinese) is desirable.

  • Ability to work as a team player, maintain positive attitude and be flexible.
  • Ability to uphold effective working relationships in multi-cultural settings.
  • Ability to work under pressure with tight deadlines and an entrepreneurial spirit. Ability to respond timely to queries and provide feedback.
  • Ability to adapt to changes and work in a matrix management structure.
  • Ability to develop an understanding of Rule of law, keen sense of ethics, integrity and commitment to IDLO's mandate.
COMPENSATION AND BENEFITS
The annual salary level for this fixed-term professional staff, internationally recruited, position is in the range of €39,000 as per IDLO's salary scale and according to qualifications and experience, plus other admissible allowances such as education, housing, relocation and home leave.
The compensation is net of tax. IDLO offers competitive remuneration and benefit package: subsidized health insurance coverage including life insurance, medical and dental through Vanbreda International to the staff member and all eligible dependents. Eligible staff member are also entitled to IDLO Provident Fund where IDLO contributes 14% of the staff member's base salary.
